Incentives aren’t complicated. We just ignore what ours are actually doing. The thing that bewilders me so much is that we live in a system with an almost incomprehensible amount of untapped potential and wealth, and instead of cultivating it, we burn it out. I can’t tell you how many people I met going into college with stars in their eyes, genuinely wanting to help people, build something meaningful, contribute to society, or make the world better. Then a few years pass and so many of them come out exhausted, cynical, disillusioned, and just trying to survive. It is a massive waste of human potential. And what makes it even worse is that we take this failure to cultivate human potential and then moralize it and personalize it. We build institutions that fail to give people meaningful paths forward, fail to develop their abilities, fail to make use of their talents, and often actively grind them down and then when they struggle, stagnate, burn out, or fall behind, we turn around and tell them that it is a personal failure. 'You weren’t disciplined enough. You didn’t work hard enough. You chose the wrong degree. You should have networked more. You should have learned a trade. You should have moved. You should have invested earlier. You should have made better decisions.' At some point, an enormous structural failure gets transformed into a moralfaggotry about individual character. Yes people have agency but if millions of people are repeatedly being underdeveloped, underused, alienated, and burned out, then you cannot explain all of that by pointing to millions of separate personal failures. A civilization should be judged partly by what it is capable of bringing out of its people. If enormous amounts of intelligence, creativity, ambition, compassion, craftsmanship, and curiosity are routinely wasted, that is a failure of the civilization itself. We have the ability to produce more. We have the ability to build more. We have the ability to educate and cultivate people, to create institutions that actually develop their talents, and to create multiple paths through life for different kinds of people with different abilities, interests, and temperaments. We have the productive and technological capacity to create a society far greater than the one we have now, and in many respects even our technology is probably behind where it could have been because of how badly we have organized and directed human potential. And this is what makes it bigger than the suffering of people alive today. Every person whose potential gets crushed represents something that may never be built, discovered, invented, written, taught, cured, organized, or passed down. You start thinking not only about the lives being wasted now, but about generations that have not even been born yet. We are screwing countless descendants out of a future that could have been more beautiful, more prosperous, more advanced, more creative, and more humane. They will inherit the consequences of everything we failed to build because we were willing to waste the people capable of building it. To me, that is more than inefficiency. There is something horrifying about possessing the capacity to create a better civilization, failing to cultivate that capacity, and then blaming the very people whose potential was squandered. The system is not only failing ourselves. The system is stealing a future from people who do not even exist yet and who will never know what kind of world they could have inherited. That, to me, is a crime against humanity in the deepest sense of the phrase. I hate the system and I want to see it burn.

China and Canada just met on September 4th to discuss cooperation between their two militaries. Our Government issued no public statement confirming the meeting. Reports from sources such as Lianhe Zaobao and others explicitly state that Carney’s Government did not announce it, and no confirmation appears on official Canadian government sites. The only coverage of the event is because of the Chinese announcement of it. There’s a problem when they need to keep this information from the public.
