Living Goods and Kenya’s The Ministry of Health have co-designed and tested a Smart Supervision Assistant that helps Community Health Assistants turn eCHIS data into targeted action — strengthening how they coach and support Community Health Promoters. During a Ministry visit in partnership with the Kisumu County Department of Medical Services,Public Health & Sanitation focused on smart supervision and innovation, Dr. Maureen Kimani, Head of the Division of Community Health, saw how the Assistant identifies missed services and translates them into prioritized tasks. These might include an under-five child who was not assessed or a pregnant woman whose delivery plan was not discussed. Teams using the Assistant have reported encouraging improvements: - Household visitation increased from 72% to an average of 92–94% - Postnatal care coverage increased from approximately 60% to 85% - Supportive supervision increased from approximately 70% to 80–90% Living Goods is now adding an agentic AI layer that will analyze performance data, generate daily priorities and alerts, handle routine follow-up, and escalate cases requiring human support. GenAI - eCHIS Solution: Transforming Community Health with AI Integrating GenAI into eCHIS is revolutionising the roles of Community Health Promoters (CHPs), Community Health Assistants (CHAs), and other health workers by streamlining each stage of the community health data cycle. Across Kenya, CHPs collect critical data, including immunisations, pregnancies, malnutrition, and access to water and sanitation, while CHAs aggregate and analyse this information to identify gaps, monitor trends, and prioritise support across Community Health Units. To further enhance community health workflows, Amref Health Africa in Kenya, in partnership with The Ministry of Health, county leadership, and the Gates Foundation, collaborated with Dalberg to develop an innovative AI-powered assistant (CHA AI Assistant) accessible via WhatsApp. Leveraging eCHIS data, this assistant provides actionable performance summaries and timely health alerts, significantly reducing manual reporting time and enabling health teams to act swiftly and effectively. By automating data analysis and reporting, GenAI allows the AI assistant to quickly summarise health data, helping CHPs and CHAs identify key cases and emerging trends such as missed immunisations or families needing follow-up care. This leads to more targeted interventions and better resource allocation. For health workers, GenAI reduces reporting burdens, provides real-time alerts on urgent issues, and ensures access to critical information, ultimately empowering teams to make faster, more informed decisions. Today we officially handed over the solution to The Ministry of Health. The code, infrastructure, and expertise now reside within the system it was designed to support, with ongoing guidance from a trained group of AI Champions who contributed to its development and testing. We hope this solution becomes an enduring part of community health decision-making in Kenya and serves as a model for developing digital health tools in partnership with governments, ensuring true local ownership.
