📰 What happened in mining last week EMCD Digest | October 19–25, 2026 ♦️ Bitcoin’s seven-day hashrate is back above 1 ZH/s

The seven-day average has regained 1,000 EH/s, its highest level since March 3, a week after the October 16 retarget took difficulty up 5.92%. The next adjustment is currently tracking at about +6.10%. If the forecast holds, a second large increase in a row would put additional pressure on miners already operating close to breakeven.

♦️ MARA moved 1,000 BTC to exchanges as its stock fell 45%

Wallets tagged as MARA sent two batches of 500 BTC, worth about $82.8 million, to Binance, Gate and Coinbase on October 14 and 19 — roughly 2,000 BTC since September 22. The company has not said why. Its shares fell 44.8%, from $13.63 on September 22 to $7.53 on October 16. 

♦️ Bitdeer mined 1,355 BTC in September and kept 47

Production rose 200% year over year to 1,355 BTC, with self-mining hashrate at 82.3 EH/s against 79.9 in August and 35 a year ago. Co-mining added 28.7 EH/s. The treasury tells the other half of the story: 47 BTC held at the end of September, down from 61 in August and 2,029 a year earlier.

♦️ An esports company is buying 4.47 EH/s

NIP Group, owner of Ninjas in Pyjamas, said on October 20 it is acquiring machines carrying about 4.47 EH/s for up to 247.1 million Class A shares, valued at up to $27.3 million. The rigs already run at hosting sites. Across all three tranches the company projects about 13.85 EH/s and 195 BTC a month at full deployment.

♦️ San Diego moved to pause new data centers

On October 22 Mayor Todd Gloria signed an executive order directing staff to advance a temporary moratorium on new data center development; the City Council takes it up on October 26. The order cites pressure on water supply, the power grid and limited land, and calls for preliminary recommendations within 180 days. It follows a proposed 400 MW project at the NAVWAR site, which the moratorium would not reach — that land is federal. Mining is not named, but this is a new kind of constraint: not the tariff, but permission to build. 

♦️ A water heater element that mines at 34 TH/s

Heatbit’s Bitwater replaces the lower heating element in a standard tank with 20 Bitmain BM1370 chips. The vendor lists up to 34 TH/s, up to 600 W and efficiency from 12 J/TH. Preorders opened around October 22 at $899, with shipping planned for Q1 2027.

📰 What happened in mining last week EMCD Digest | October 12–18, 2026 ♦️ Binance Pool will shut down on November 10

Binance will discontinue its mining pool and related services on November 10 at 07:00 UTC, so miners need to redirect their hashrate before the cutoff. For operators evaluating an alternative, EMCD is offering 14 days of mining with zero pool fees + 1 free month of EMCD Monitoring for new users moving from Binance Pool with promo code welcome2.

♦️ Difficulty jumped 5.92% — the third-largest increase of 2026

The October 16 retarget at block 971,712 took difficulty from 132.72T to 140.58T, the highest level since March 5. It followed hashrate climbing back above 1,000 EH/s. Hashprice ended October 16 at $36.75/PH/s/day, compared with $37.56 on September 16, after twice moving above $41 during the previous 30 days. Ten of this year’s 21 retargets have been increases.

♦️ What the retarget does to breakeven

Two days before the adjustment, CryptoSlate modelled what a ~5.7% retarget would do to power-only breakeven. For a 20 J/TH machine, the ceiling fell from 8.29 to 7.84 cents/kWh in that scenario. At 8 cents, the same rig moved from a $1.37 daily cushion per PH/s to a ~ $0.77 shortfall. The calculation excludes pool fees, cooling and overhead.

♦️ Financing costs are rising as miners face a ~$50B AI funding gap

BlocksBridge’s earlier estimate, based on VanEck data, puts the funding gap for publicly traded miners’ planned AI infrastructure at roughly $50B — including $21.1B for IREN, $7.2B for Riot and $4.6B for HIVE. What changed this week is the financing backdrop: IREN’s June GPU package carried a blended 6% rate, while an August package came at 9%.

♦️ Block’s Proto hashboards go on sale one at a time

Sazmining is selling single immersion hashboards from Block’s Proto division — about 200 TH/s at roughly 15 J/TH — for $1,397 down and $4,187 in total over 18 interest-free months. The buyer owns the board, while Sazmining hosts and operates it at a US site. Mining starts in November or December. Output depends on difficulty, power price and how the hardware performs.

📰 What happened in mining last week EMCD Digest | October 5–11, 2026  ♦️ Bitcoin hashrate stayed flat globally — but kept moving between regions

Global Bitcoin hashrate ended Q3 at roughly 941 EH/s, almost unchanged quarter over quarter, but the regional mix shifted. The US remained the largest market at about 335 EH/s, though its share fell for a third straight quarter to 35.6%; China declined to roughly 110 EH/s, while Paraguay held fourth place globally at around 45 EH/s. Venezuela was one of the fastest-growing markets in the quarter, rising about 67% to roughly 10 EH/s.

♦️ CleanSpark sold more Bitcoin than it mined in September

CleanSpark produced 529 BTC in September, down from 593 in August, while average operating hashrate came in at 36 EH/s. The company sold 702 BTC during the month and finished September holding 13,530 BTC, down from 13,703. CleanSpark also said it will stop publishing monthly operating updates and move to standard quarterly reporting, in line with peers in the energy and data center sectors.

♦️ Luxor put the cost of hashrate-based financing at 6–13% annualized

Luxor’s September market review showed a 6–13% annualized financing spread for structures where miners receive cash upfront by selling future hashrate and use a second forward to hedge hashprice. The structure can give miners non-dilutive financing, but the number is a historical market spread, not a guaranteed return: delivery, counterparty and collateral requirements still matter. 

♦️ US energy policy is shifting more grid costs toward large power users

The US Department of Energy backed proposed PJM reforms that would require large new electricity consumers to pay for the generation and infrastructure needed to serve them instead of shifting those costs to existing customers. It is not an active universal tariff yet, but the direction matters for new mining and data-center projects: access to cheap energy increasingly needs to be evaluated together with capacity and grid-connection costs.

♦️ PowerCompute repaid a $22.45M Bitcoin-backed facility with 267.4 BTC

PowerCompute used about 267.4 BTC to fully repay a $22.45 million Bitcoin-backed credit facility, and all Bitcoin pledged as collateral under it was released. Total secured debt fell from $23.70 million to about $1.25 million. The move shows how miners can use treasury holdings to simplify their balance sheet and redirect capital toward equipment and expansion.
