📰 What happened in mining last week EMCD Digest | September 7–12, 2026 ♦️ Around 235 EH/s of Bitcoin mining capacity is currently sitting idle
Luxor estimates total net ASIC capacity at roughly 1,150 EH/s against about 915 EH/s of active hashrate, leaving some 235 EH/s unviable, curtailed, in transit or under maintenance. The risk got sharper in August: hashprice rose 24.4% from $31.63 to $39.33 per PH/s/day and hit $40.02 on August 27, the first $40 print in 220 days. Improving economics can pull marginal machines back online, only for the added hashrate to lift difficulty and compress margins again. Fleets in the 25–38 J/TH band still averaged about $45/MWh against a $48/MWh network-average power cost — a third consecutive month below breakeven.
♦️ Weak ASIC demand pushed Canaan's product revenue down to $13.6M
Canaan’s equipment revenue fell from $42.9M in Q1 to $13.6M in Q2, and total revenue halved to $31.9M. The company points to “decreased computing power sold and average selling price, resulting from a tightening of overall market demand led by the decline in the bitcoin price.” Its own non-JV fleet meanwhile reached 10.05 EH/s, up 23.3% year over year, producing 243 BTC in the quarter at an all-in power cost near $0.043/kWh.
♦️ CleanSpark mined 593 BTC in August and sold 821
Holdings closed the month at 13,703 BTC, of which 3,951 sat as derivative collateral or receivable. Average operating hashrate was 38.3 EH/s at a peak fleet efficiency of 16.07 J/TH. The company also received conditional ERCOT classification for 585 MW of contracted capacity for batch zero baseload designation and 300 MW for studied load — power access and queue position now matter as much as fleet size.
♦️ HIVE passed $1M in average daily revenue, with about $100K from GPU cloud
Since August 21 HIVE has mined roughly 12 BTC a day, about 2% of global output, while its GPU cloud has generated around $100,000 in average daily revenue. Combined revenue now exceeds $1M a day under current conditions. HIVE reports more than $600M in GPU cloud contract value year to date, but notes this includes letters of intent and does not guarantee recognised revenue. For now, mining remains the main operating engine.
♦️ Plattsburgh is weighing a 12-month moratorium on mining and AI data centers
The New York city’s common council discussed pausing permits for any facility drawing 300 kW or more. The proposal places crypto mining and AI data centers under the same "high energy use facility" definition. Nothing is approved yet and the council meets again on September 17. Plattsburgh was among the first US jurisdictions to impose a temporary mining moratorium — an 18-month pause back in 2018.
♦️ Mexico seized 300 mining rigs illegally drawing power from a hydroelectric complex
Authorities found the site in Tlaola, Puebla, next to the Nuevo Necaxa complex, connected directly to infrastructure fed by the federal dam. Transformers, medium-voltage gear and satellite antennas were seized alongside the machines. Federal prosecutors, the Navy and state police are investigating, with a separate money-laundering line of inquiry.

Mining is global. Rules are local.
🇰🇿 Kazakhstan has been steadily building out its digital mining rules since 2023. Mining is licensed, equipment goes into a state registry, and this summer the country, added another piece to the puzzle: a strategic mining mechanism with long-term power agreements for qualifying projects.
And the market is moving with it: 78 digital mining entities and more than 465,000 registered mining devices. If you mine in Kazakhstan, there’s one more thing to keep in mind: your pool needs to be accredited locally. Right now, only seven pools are on the list. EMCD is one of them 🏭 So what does that look like in practice?
✔️ Local stratum servers in Kazakhstan — less distance between your ASICs and the pool, lower latency ✔️ User data stored in-country ✔️24/7 support ✔️1.5% pool fee and daily payouts
And miners in Kazakhstan are already sending their hashrate our way. Setting up a new site or thinking about switching pools?  ➡️ Connect to EMCD Mining Pool 🔳 Community / Website / EMCD App / Twitter / Support

📰 What happened in mining last week EMCD Digest | August 31–September 6, 2026  ♦️ Bitcoin mining difficulty rose 1.31% to 127.45T
At block 965,664 on September 5, Bitcoin difficulty increased from 125.81T to 127.45T, reversing the previous 1.31% decline. The adjustment was relatively small, but for miners it means slightly more competition for the same block subsidy at unchanged hashrate and operating conditions.
♦️ Bitcoin mining revenue returned above $1B in August
Miners collected about $1.008B during August — roughly $1.001B from block subsidies and $7.1M from transaction fees — making it the strongest revenue month since May. The recovery coincided with a 24.95% monthly rise in BTC, although hashprice was still around $38.86 per PH/s per day at the time of the report, keeping efficiency and power costs central to mining economics.
♦️ ZEC surged past $1,200 as rising solrate kept mining gains in check
Zcash surged past $1,200 over the weekend, reaching an intraday high of $1,249 — its highest level since late 2016 and more than 45% above a week earlier. The rally also attracted more mining power: Zcash network solrate briefly exceeded 30 GSol/s for the first time. As competition increased, individual miner revenue remained roughly 3% below levels seen when ZEC was trading under $900, showing how quickly additional hashrate can absorb the upside from a higher coin price.
♦️ Hyperscale Data shut down its Michigan Bitcoin mine to prepare the site for AI
Hyperscale Data ended all Bitcoin mining at its Dowagiac, Michigan facility on September 1 and is preparing an initial 20 MW for an AI colocation customer in Q4 2026. The site currently operates at 30 MW and is targeted for expansion to 340 MW, while the customer can scale to 52 MW. The agreement starts with a 10-year term plus two five-year extension options and could be worth about $1.2B if it runs for the full 20 years.
♦️ Quantum Blockchain Technologies raised £350K for Bitcoin mining R&D
QBT raised £350,000 before expenses through the placement of 140M new shares at 0.25 pence each. The proceeds will support development and testing of its Method C AI Oracle, work to bring ASIC Ultra Boost technology closer to market readiness, and integration with mining hardware and software. Its US patent application has received formal approval, but the patent has not yet been formally granted.

Zcash in 2026: why miners are watching ZEC again  ZEC has been one of August’s standout coins, reaching roughly $880 — its highest level since 2018
The more relevant story for miners is happening on-chain. The Zcash hashrate set a new all-time high of 27.9 GH/s on August 28 and has stayed near those levels. Difficulty has climbed out of its summer range too, though it still fluctuates day to day.
ZEC is also drawing in bigger players, from mining to traditional finance:
♦️ Cypherpunk Technologies acquired a fleet of Antminer Z15 Pro units with a combined hashrate of around 4.2 GSol/s — roughly 18% of the Zcash network hashrate at the time of the deal.  ♦️ Grayscale launched the first spot Zcash ETF, giving investors another way to get exposure to ZEC without holding the coin directly.
Privacy is another part of the picture. The amount of ZEC held in shielded pools — the private side of the network, where transaction amounts and addresses can be hidden — has grown to around 4.85 million ZEC, nearly 29% of the circulating supply. Taken together: strong price action, a network hashrate at record levels, a major public company moving into ZEC mining, and growing use of the coin’s privacy features. For miners, that’s enough reason to take another close look at ZEC. 🔥 — if you’d like to see Zcash on EMCD 🔳 Community / Website / EMCD App / Twitter / Support

Bitcoin Asia: completed ✔️  One topic followed us pretty much everywhere: AI × mining.
🐲 Kin Fung, Partnerships Director APAC at EMCD, joined the Genesis Stage panel to talk about where the two actually meet. Spoiler: before AI and mining compete for headlines, they compete for power.
Grid connections may be shared ground. Cooling, uptime requirements and operating models are not. Which is also why not every miner is planning an AI pivot. For most, the more immediate job is still making the operation they already run perform better.
Meanwhile, at Booth 29, our claw machine side quest somehow became a two-day competition for EMCD merch 😎

📰 What happened in mining last week EMCD Digest | August 24–30, 2026  ♦️ Zcash rally pushed ZEC mining revenue well above Bitcoin
As of August 24, a Z15 Pro mining ZEC was estimated to generate about $727 in gross revenue per MWh, roughly 4.5 times the estimate for an S23 Pro mining Bitcoin — a snapshot that also shows how quickly PoW economics can change with coin prices.
♦️ IREN’s AI cloud revenue overtook Bitcoin mining for the first time
In the quarter ended June 30, AI cloud brought IREN $70.5M against $66.7M from mining, down from $111.2M a year earlier. The $684M net loss includes a $450.4M non-cash impairment from decommissioning miners to free up space for AI. Shares fell about 8%.
♦️ Soluna and Bitdeer signed a 28 MW co-mining deal in Texas
Bitdeer’s Sealminer A2 Pro Air rigs will run at Soluna’s 83 MW wind-powered Project Kati 1 in Willacy County. Soluna provides site and power, Bitdeer provides hardware, and both share the mined output. Deployment starts in September, adding roughly 1.93 EH/s.
♦️ Sphere 3D faces a $2.2M US customs claim on miners bought in 2022
CBP classifies the machines as Chinese-origin goods. The claim equals about 77% of the company’s $2.8M cash balance as of June 30 and roughly 11x its working capital. Sphere 3D cites seller certificates of origin and plans to protest.
♦️ Tether’s $120M Uruguay mining project collapsed over a power contract
Reuters reported the real cause was a dispute with state utility UTE over contracted capacity: Tether read the figure as a floor, UTE as a ceiling. Repeated multi-day outages followed, unpaid bills reached about $4.8M, and both sites were shut down.
♦️ Two more US municipalities passed 12-month mining moratoriums
Whiteville (North Carolina) and Garfield Township (Michigan) each approved year-long pauses on new data centers and crypto mining. Both cited utility strain and the need to write siting rules first; Garfield’s vote was unanimous and blocked a proposed project.
