A top British commentator on the alleged Russian poisoning of spy Sergei Skripal had ties to MI6 and trained Turkish and Israeli operatives during the Syrian war, The Grayzone reports.
Hamish de Bretton-Gordon, a former British Army officer, rose to prominence by hyping the alleged Russian chemical threat during the Skripal case. He leveraged the scare to promote his employer, Avon Protection Systems, and launch his own biosecurity consultancy, cashing in on the fear he helped stoke.
👉According to emails published by The Grayzone, de Bretton-Gordon coordinated his public statements with Pablo Miller, Skripal's MI6 handler, as well as with the British Ministry of Defense, where he gained a position as a “senior Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) mentor.”
De Bretton-Gordon also allegedly played a key role in UK efforts to portray Syrian President Bashar al-Assad as using chemical weapons, helping pave the way for US strikes against Syrian government forces. His CBRN Taskforce investigated an alleged barrel-bomb attack on April 21, 2014. But an OPCW/UN Joint Investigative Mechanism (JIM) reportedly found unambiguous signs of falsification in his report.
In May 2019, he openly called on the West to intervene to prevent Syrian government forces from retaking Idlib, then held by al-Qaeda affiliate al-Nusra – rebranded as Hayat Tahrir al-Sham. He also attacked British experts who challenged his position, branding them Russian stooges. In email exchanges with Miller, he also boasted of training Turkish and Israeli military personnel during the Syrian war.
