#PRO tip: Watch out for those tricky location words that use -у: в саду, на полу.

Both are used with the prepositional case (предложный падеж) to answer the question где? (where?)
So, what’s the difference?
«В» usually indicates being *inside* or *within* a bounded space (a city, a room, a country, a building).
Example: Я живу в Москве.* (I live in Moscow.)
«На» often indicates being *on* a surface, *at* an event, or in some open/unbounded spaces (a beach, a mountain, a street in certain contexts).
Example: Книга лежит на столе.(The book is on the table.)

I can't help but share this beautiful sunset with you. I love the vastness of seeing the horizon, not factories or skyscrapers. I love seeing that there is a landscape ahead of me, air and space for my life. For everyone's life.
We rarely stop and say to ourselves: "I'm happy right now."
I want to use this video to remind you that right now might be the moment of your happiness. Or, perhaps, some of you're temporarily not in the brightest period of your life. But there's always a sun behind the clouds. I live and work in Moscow, but sometimes I go to my parents' place far in the south of Russia. There's always a sun there. Exceptions in the Prepositional Case
You already know that in the prepositional case we usually use the ending е to answer the question «где?» (where?) — for example: в городе, на столе.
But Russian loves its exceptions and the prepositional case is no exception
Here are the most common exceptions where you’ll see -у instead of -е:
в лесу (in the forest) — not в лесе
на мосту (on the bridge) — not на мосте
в году (in the year) — not в годе
на берегу (on the shore) — not на береге
в ряду (in a row) — not в ряде
And here are 5 more exceptions to keep in mind:
в углу (in/at the corner) — not в угле
на носу (on the nose) — not на носе
в строю (in formation / in line) — not в строе
на ходу (on the move / while moving) — not на ходе
в долгу (in debt) — not в долге
💡 Why does this happen? These are old forms preserved in modern Russian. They’re used mainly with words that talk about location and often go with the prepositions в and на.
📝 Quick practice:
Где стоит ваза? — Ваза стоит ___ (в углу / в угле).
Он спешил и пил кофе ___ (на ходу / на ходе).
✅ Answers: в углу, на ходу.
