I have a theory. The sexiest photograph from a shoot is very often NOT the one where she is trying hardest to look sexy. It’s the second before. Or after. When she laughs at something stupid. When she’s looking for a bottle of water. When she’s fighting with a drink that refuses to open. When she looks at me in between two poses and I have no idea anymore what she was asking me. 😂 I picked five photos where exactly that happened and wrote about them for The Heatwave Diaries. Busy week. I’ve been writing a lot for The Heatwave Diaries and Patreon, and on Friday evening I did another shoot with Nuria too. I’ve got a bunch of GoPro BTS from that one that I’ll show you very soon 👀 But for Sunday evening I wanted the complete opposite. Just me, alone, the beach in El Saler, sunset, and a book by one of my favorite authors. If you’ve never read Mark Manson, start with The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck. I know the title makes it sound like one of those slightly annoying self help books 😂 but it genuinely changed the way I think about quite a few things. I love the way he writes too. Very direct, funny, sometimes uncomfortable, but never full of bullshit. Now I’m reading Everything Is F*cked: A Book About Hope. Not a bad way to finish another August week in Valencia. 🌅📖

I took this photo of Mafer about three years ago. It has behaved itself and stayed perfectly still somewhere in a forgotten corner of my hard drives ever since. Then I used modern technology to make her move. I’m starting to look at my old photographs very differently now. None of them are safe.

Some photoshoots follow the plan. This one involved Celina, Chiara, a hidden Ibiza pier, zero phone signal, questionable office wear and a “quick cool-off” that became very photogenic 😌 Basically, the plan did not survive the afternoon. I wrote about why that’s often when the best photos start happening in the new Heatwave Diaries story.

Apparently the finished photos were not enough evidence, so here is what the morning actually looked like. 😂 Sabrina and Chiara laughing through half the setups, me giving highly advanced creative direction such as “Wow. Incredible,” and all three of us pretending this was a completely normal Wednesday before breakfast. Jokes aside, I genuinely love sharing this side of the shoots with you. The messages, comments and wonderfully specific observations you send me make this feel like much more than me simply uploading photos into the internet. You are part of this strange little world I am building, and I appreciate that more than I probably say often enough. Two weeks hiking along the Portuguese coast. A lot of sun, not enough water and this rather impressive rock in the Atlantic. It left me sunburned and dehydrated.
