REFUSE vs REJECT These two words are often confused, but they’re used differently: • REFUSE - to say NO to something or to not agree to do something: ✅ He refused to answer my question. ✅ She refused to accept the offer. • REJECT = to not accept or choose something/someone officially ✅ The university rejected my application. ✅ His proposal was rejected by the committee. ❌ They asked me for help but I rejected ❌ His loan application was refused @ieltsboyko P.S. REFUSE - YOU say NO. REJECT - SOMETHING is not accepted officially

Doctors’ Day - not officially celebrated; Police Day - not officially celebrated; Politicians’ Day — not officially celebrated; And yet, Teachers’ Day is an official public holiday, a day marked in red on the calendar I’m not trying to say anything bad about other professions. I respect them all (well, except wedding dancers) But the fact that teaching is the only profession officially honoured with a public holiday… There’s definitely some food for thought here @ieltsboyko

Alyona is a teacher at The Intellectuals who has taken the IELTS test for the second time and improved her score from 7.5 to 8.0! Now, she has the experience of two IELTS tests to share with those of you who are planning to take the test yourself I’ll be interviewing her soon and asking her about the advice from both attempts, things that might help you on your own IELTS journey. Congratulations, Alyona! For me, your score is 8.5! @ieltsboyko

There are estimates that English has over 1,000,000 words And yet, knowing around 20,000 words can be more than enough to achieve IELTS Band 9.0 provided that you can use them accurately and naturally. That means a Niner doesn't know “all English words”. Far from it. We may be familiar with only around 2% of the English vocabulary. The other 98%? We don't know them, and that's perfectly fine! You don't need to learn everything. You need to know frequently used words really, really well @ieltsboyko

IELTS Speaking isn't public speaking Many candidates watch public speeches on social media and then enter the IELTS exam as if 500 people have paid $100 each to hear them speak. Relax! Nobody is waiting for your life-changing speech. There is no stage. No microphone. No standing ovation. No audience crying in the front row. There is just one examiner sitting across from you, asking: “Do you like your hometown?” You don't need to: ❌ stare into the examiner's soul ❌ deliver a memorised masterpiece ❌ sound like you're addressing the United Nations Just communicate! Think about how you would answer the question if you were sitting in a café with someone you had just met. IELTS Speaking is a conversation, not your audition for TED Talks. @ieltsboyko

There’s an app called Assistant IELTS Speaking. Many candidates believe it’s an official app working with Cambridge and somehow knows exactly what IELTS examiners are going to ask. Well… not quite. The app is basically a database built from candidates’ reports. People who have recently taken the test share the questions they were asked, and these questions are added to the app. The problem? Not every candidate reports their questions, not every question makes it into the database, and some questions may simply be missing. Still, many candidates expect the examiner to open the app, look at their screen and go: “Ah, excellent. Question 17 from Assistant IELTS Speaking. Just as planned" Use the app for practice, not as a guarantee of what you’ll get in the real test @ieltsboyko

Strange calculations in IELTS One of my students, Maftuna, recently received her IELTS score breakdown, and she was surprised by these numbers: 🎧 Listening: 32/40 → Band 7.0 (check the score table) 📖 Reading: 32/40 → Band 7.5 (check the score table) Here’s the thing: the conversion tables you find online are approximate. The exact number of correct answers needed for a particular band can vary depending on the difficulty of the test. Maftuna, for example, answered many difficult questions so her 32 correct answers were enough for 7.5. That’s why online IELTS score tables should be treated as guidelines, not absolute rules But there’s another interesting part: rounding. Speaking and writing scores are rounded down in IELTS. Overall scores are rounded up. If you get Listening 7.0 Reading 7.0 Speaking 7.0 Writing 6.0 Your overall will be 7.0 But if your speaking has Fluency 7.0 Grammar 7.0 Vocabulary 7.0 Pronunciation 6.0 Your speaking score will be 6.5 @ieltsboyko
