Fire Beacon Barrow-Cairn is a Bronze Age burial mound in the Quantock hills near Crowcombe, Somerset. The c. 4000 year old stony barrow has been repaired after being vandalised two years ago but now it has recently been attacked again. Someone has removed rocks so that it is no longer a mound. The desecration of the holy site is not only sacrilege but can also disrupt remains making archaeological and genetic research more difficult.

Vandals have destroyed ancient rock carvings in Northern Sweden near Umeå this summer. A report was filed to police on 15th September and witnesses are being called to come forward. In 2017 a carving was identified there at Hamrinsberget and estimated to be up to 4000 years old. The location was classified as a legally protected archaeological site but was at risk because it was so accessible. Even when it was identified there was lots of modern graffiti around it. The rock carving, which is compared to a ping pong racket or a frying pan, was unique with an unusual motif that is not found anywhere else in Norrland.

🚨BREAKING🚨 My love of the Dordogne region may be explained by the NEW discovery of the oldest example of a man carrying a Pre-I1 haplogroup carrying many (59/300) of the SNP's associated with Nordic Bronze Age I1 (from which modern I1 Y haplogroups such as mine descend). The sample is Chancelade man from Raymonden cave - a Magdalenian living 24,000 years ago. Like the Indo-Europeans 18k years later, he was buried with knees raised and covered in ochre. He isn't actually ancestral to the clade that became the dominant elite lineage of the Pre-Proto-Germanic Scandinavian kings c 4000 years ago, but the relationship strongly suggests that I1 originates in continental Magdalenians and therefore entered Scandinavia from the South not via the Baltic from the East as is sometimes proposed.

The Bamberg Horseman (German: Der Bamberger Reiter) is an early 13th-century stone equestrian statue carved in Germany 200 years before the Renaissance started proper in Italy. It doesn’t look medieval.

Surely a middle path exists between techno-soteriology and the sort of traditionalism that leads to third worldism and seeks once more to enmire western man in the bog of abrahamic superstition? I accept the process of cyborgisation as an inevitable consequence of techne itself - but I maintain that it is human to seek to govern and control this process which is not inexorably set on a specific route to AGI or the singularity etc. The gods made man but intervene from time to time in the way their creation develops (see Odin’s eugenic meddling in Volsunga saga). So we shape tools and how we use them even as the tools change us. We remain an active agent like the god who made us.

Odin’s wife Frigg is the oldest continually known Germanic goddess. Her name appears in the Anglo-Saxon transliteration of the Roman names of the days of the week. The modern designation of the sixth day, Friday, which corresponds to the Latin dies Veneris, Venus’ Day, is named after her from the Anglo-Saxon Fricg (Frycg), Old Norse Frigg, Old Saxon Frî, Old High German Frîja. That Frigg is identified with Venus, the Roman Goddess of Love, is fitting considering her name is thought to derive from a proto-Germanic word, *friyo, from the Indo-European root *priya, “dear, beloved.” Frigg is widely recorded as Odin’s wife in sources dating from 750 AD onward. She and Odin have been directly linked since their first appearance together in the anonymous Origo Gentis Langobardorum (The Origin and History of the Lombards). There Odin and Frigg appear as Godan and Frea, engaged in a dispute over whom to show favor, the Winnilies, Frea’s favorites, or the Vandals, Godan’s choice: “Ambri and Assi, that is the leaders of the Vandals, asked Godan to give them victory over the Winnilies. Godan answered, say thus, ‘I shall give victory to those whom I first see at sunrise.’ At that time Gambara, with her two sons, that is Ybor and Agjo, who were chieftains over the Winnilies, asked Frea, to be propitious to the Winnilies. Then Frea gave advice that the Winniles should come at sunrise, and that their women should also come with their husbands with their hair let down around their face like beards. When it became light as the sun was rising, Frea, the wife of Godan, turned the bed where her husband was lying, putting his face toward the east, and woke him up. And looking at them, he saw the Winnilies and their women having their hair let down around their faces; and he said: ‘Who are these long-bearded ones?’ And Frea said to Godan, ‘Since you have given them a name, give them also the victory.’ And he gave them the victory, so that they should defend themselves according to this plan and gain victory. Since that time the Winnilies were called the Longobards.” Odin granted them the victory, but in practical terms, they won because their women fought alongside them. We can infer this from the text. Paul the Deacon states, "they should defend themselves according to this plan and gain victory." Tacitus explains why this strategy was necessary. Being few in number, they needed warriors, and so tasked their women to assist at Frigg's behest, and with Odin's blessing. Thus the Lombards were bold in battle. The Lombards or Longobards (“Long-beards”) are the same tribe that Tacitus knew as the Longobardi. Among the tribes listed by Tacitus as devotees of the earth-goddess Nerthus in Germania, chapter 40, the Longobardi play a prominent role. Of them, he says: “The Langobardi are distinguished by being few in number. Surrounded by many mighty peoples they have protected themselves not by submissiveness, but by battle and boldness. Next to them come the Reudigni, Aviones, Anglii, Varini, Eudoses, Suarines and Huitones protected by rivers and forests. There is nothing especially noteworthy about these states individually, but they are distinguished by a common worship of Nerthus, that is, Mother Earth, and believe she intervenes in human affairs and rides through their peoples.”

Heizmann (2014) thinks the tri-god bracteates and the fish-like animal pertain to Loki in various myths. The animal can be Loki as a fish or otter or the dead otter pelt from the same myth of Ótr in the Volsunga saga. The fish/otter-like animal motif is a compressed visual representation of the Nibelung story, rather than simply a decoration. His argument depends on the image on the Viking Age Maughold cross on the Isle of Man, being an otter pelt (pic rel) and this aerial view of a pelt can then be connected to the earlier Migration era aquatic creatures depicted from above. Heizmann also claims bracteate IK 39, from Denmark depicts a snake above Loki's head in reference to when Skaði fastens a venomous snake above his face. The animals surrounding the gods can pertain to myths across an epic chronology, combining past, present and future events into one image. What he calls a “synoptic principle”.

I think we can clearly say the 6th c. Sutton Hoo shield mount variant of the fish-dragon with pointed snout is the same beast depicted on these two bracteates from Beresina area and Denmark respectively (both approx 6th c.). Both belong to the so-called “three god” bracteate type. However, similar aquatic creatures appear on other kinds of bracteate.
