| 20 |  n the 18th century, the Scottish explorer James Bruce came to Ethiopia in search of the source of the Nile. While describing the Ethiopians’ tradition of eating raw meat, he wrote:
“First, a large tent is prepared. Then, after the guests have gathered inside, a tightly restrained ox is driven into the tent so that it cannot escape.”
He then begins insulting Ethiopians:
“The people gathered inside the tent rise one after another, cut pieces of meat from the ox, which is standing there tied up, and take them away.”
“After they have eaten as much as they want, the ox leaves the tent and begins grazing on grass.” 😁
He said all of this about a country where he himself had been freely consuming tej, tella, and katikala to his heart’s content.
Many European writers mocked him for his ignorance, saying:
“We have never lived in a country where an animal continues to graze on grass after half of its body has been eaten and the other half has been left alive.”
