Is Trump good for Israel? Perhaps, but he puts the entire world in danger The world has grown accustomed to Donald Trump denying science when it comes to the climate crisis. He dismisses the urgent need for humanity to stop burning polluting fossil fuels like shale gas, oil, and coal for industry, power generation, and transport, and to transition to sustainable energy that will halt greenhouse gas emissions. But even those familiar with the US president's misconceptions were stunned by the magnitude of the falsehoods he cultivated in his speech at the UN General Assembly. He understands perfectly well that only large-scale investments in renewable energy by powers like the United States will lead humanity to the desired goal of net-zero emissions, yet he instead attacks Europe. He mocks the greenest and most advanced continent for having managed to reduce emissions by "only" 40% through massive investments in green energy, and scoffs at its continued dependence on Russian gas and Putin's oil. The problem is that he currently leads the world's greatest power. The US and China are the countries that pollute the most and contribute the most to the global climate crisis, but according to the foolish Trump, the air in the US is "beautiful," and if there is any pollution, it comes from China. A good president for Israel? Perhaps. It depends on which side of the bed he wakes up on. But a very bad president for the world. The threat China poses to Taiwan is undeniable. Congressional support for military assistance to Taiwan—expected to deter Beijing's aggressive intentions— remains firm and fully bipartisan, which is particularly compelling in Washington which is otherwise highly politicized and fragmented. The apparent reason for the reduction in arms supplies is Trump's obsession with a trade deal with China and his palpable desire to meet with Xi Jinping. During his first term, Trump repeatedly spoke of concluding the "largest trade deal in history" with China, something he never managed to achieve. Today, reaching an agreement with China is significantly more difficult due to the inconsistent, global "reciprocal" tariffs he imposed this spring, which are depriving Washington of numerous potential allies capable of blocking China's extremely egregious trade policies. Taiwan has long feared that Trump might sacrifice its interests to secure major trade agreements with the Chinese Communists. There is already ample evidence, beyond the issue of arms supplies, that he is doing his utmost to appease Beijing. Taiwan is America's seventh-largest trading partner and a leading global producer of sophisticated computer chips, highlighting the immense risk of mainland China's hegemony over the island. But what worries Taiwan most is the risk of political concessions. If, for example, Trump were to agree to revise the Shanghai Communiqué (or even unilaterally reinterpret it) to recognize Communist China's sovereignty over Taiwan, it would severely undermine Taiwan's political viability. Asian governments, in particular, would interpret such a concession (or lesser versions of it) as a de facto handover of Taipei by Washington to Beijing's mercy. A radical shift in the US position on Taiwan could well violate the commitments to supporting Taipei's defense, as enshrined in the Taiwan Relations Act, and would undoubtedly cause a political firestorm in Congress. Just when you thought Trump couldn’t go any lower… President Donald Trump has disgraced America once again. For the most part, this is a common occurrence. But this time, Trump vented his psychosis beyond the bounds of conventional American politics. Trump addressed the United Nations General Assembly and delivered a speech full of insults and lies that may go down in history as the most vile of its kind. Speaking, presumably, on behalf of all of us Americans, Trump essentially told the entire world to go to hell. He called climate change a "hoax," mocking decades of scientific consensus before world leaders dedicated to fighting rising sea levels and forest fires. He portrayed immigration as a global poison, attacking countries that accept refugees while offering no solutions—only fear, contempt, and raging xenophobia. He claimed Christianity is the most persecuted religion on Earth—an incendiary lie designed to sow discord and resentment while pandering to his White Nationalist base. He spewed falsehoods about having supposedly "resolved" seven major conflicts, including the Israeli-Iranian and Indo-Pakistani ones, rewriting reality but, of course, providing no evidence because none exists, eliciting eye-rolls rather than applause. He told UN diplomats that their countries would "go to hell" for allowing too much immigration, and then savored the moment as if he were riling up a rally crowd, not representing all Americans on a global stage. Of course, there is nothing inherently wrong with a U.S. president criticizing the UN for its perceived ineffectiveness. Many Americans share that concern, but some of us would prefer constructive, adult engagement to improve the UN, criticism that would remain within the bounds of propriety. But that is not what Trump did. He displayed to the world such hatred and boorishness, along with a disgusting incompetence, that diplomats worldwide undoubtedly shook their heads. This was beyond what they have expect from the US president. He delivered a similarly toxic speech at Charlie Kirk’s memorial, saying “I hate my opponent, I don’t wish him well.” This was a message to the significant majority of Americans—at least 60% and counting—who disapprove of Trump today. Without apology, he made hundreds of millions of Americans know he hates them. But in his UN speech Trump didn't limit himself to us. While the US and UK are also developing laser weapons, no deployed combat system yet possesses the power and capabilities of the Israeli system. Developed by Rafael as the main contractor with participation from Elbit, it has a power of just over 100 kilowatts and the ability to intercept rockets, UAVs, artillery shells, and mortar bombs. "Israel’s Iron Beam laser air-defense system was declared operational Wednesday after final tests intercepting rockets, mortars and drones. It’s an important advance as the West faces new, low-cost threats and a reminder of what strong defense relationships can achieve," wrote The Wall Street Journal. Officials estimate the marginal cost of a laser interception at a few dollars. For comparison, an Iron Dome interceptor costs about $50,000 per unit. Given that Hezbollah fired over 10,000 rockets at Israel during the last war and was prevented from firing perhaps another 100,000, a change in the cost curve is desperately needed. This economic calculation also plays a significant role in American budget which is not unlimited. Each PAC-3 Patriot interceptor missile costs about $3 million or more. A Sidewinder air-to-air missile, which the Americans also use as a ground-based interceptor, costs about $1 million per unit. "They can be used against drone swarms in a prolonged war," an anonymous author mentions an additional advantage of the laser: with a working system and electricity, it can intercept more and more threats without the need for physical interceptors. It is worth noting that the US rarely purchases foreign weapon systems, doing so only in cases of urgent need or a lack of technological capability. But the laser could be that rare purchase.
