Al-Atqānī’s Praise of Imām al-Qudūrī raḥimahullah (d.428 AH) Back in my Iftaa days 10 years ago when Ghāyah al-Bayān was not yet printed, I would use the manuscript of Ghāyah al-Bayān as our beloved teacher Mufti Husain Sb had told us the importance of Al-Atqānī. I remember coming across this quote of Al-Atqānī regarding Al-Qudūrī raḥimahullah (d.428 AH) in the King Saud manuscript waraqah 61, side baa:
And it is sufficient for you as an evidence upon the vastness of his knowledge his commentary upon the Mukhtaṣar of Al-Karkhῑ raḥimahullah, so when you read it, you will recognise that his status in fiqh is by the Capella, not the hand of every person can reach him, and the eyesight of the onlooker returns towards his status with fatigue and redness.
I jumped at it and added it to my Ḥanafī book which was still in a foetus stage. Fast forward 9 years later and Ghāyah al-Bayān has now been printed and I found this quote by reading the manuscript and locating the place in the printed book. It’s a gem of a quote and what is ironic is that the researcher who worked on Sharḥ Mukhtaṣar al-Karkhī, Shaykh ‘Abdullah Nadheer did not add it to his research of the book despite Sharḥ Mukhtaṣar al-Karkhī being printed after Ghāyah al-Bayān.

Gems from Today’s  Sahih Ibn Hibban Lesson & The Recitation of Shaykh Yusuf Motala Rahimahullah In today’s lesson, we came across the following hadith in our lesson on Sahih Ibn Hibban: Allah does not listen to anything as attentively as He listens to a prophet reciting the Qurʾān melodiously. After this hadith, Ibn Hibban says: Translation: “He wishes to yataghannā with the Qurʾān”: What is meant by this is to beautify one's voice with it, not what some people think. The word al-ghinyah (self-sufficiency) would have required the expression yastaghnī bihi (“to seek sufficiency through it”), and he did not say that; rather he said yataghannā bihi. Thus, “to beautify oneself with it” is intended, not “to seek sufficiency through it.” Nor is beautifying oneself with the Qurʾān the same as chanting melodies in the manner of singers according to the rhythms of music. Rather, beautifying the recitation of the Qurʾān means two things: sorrow (al-asaf) and yearning/longing (al-talahhuf). Sorrow arises from reflecting upon one's shortcomings and failings, while yearning arises from contemplating what one has neglected of obedience. When the heart is pained and grieved, and the voice becomes sorrowful and trembling, the eye sheds tears and the heart is softened. Then the reciter seeks aid through weeping in turning humbly to Allah and remembering the Hereafter, hoping for the forgiveness of sins and deliverance from sins, offenses, faults, and defects. We ask Allah for success. After this hadith, my teacher Mufti Shabbir Ahmad Sahib sais regarding Shaykh Maulana Yusuf Motala rahimahullah: ہمارے حضرت بہت سادہ پڑھتے تھے، لیکن اُن کی قراءت میں درد تھا۔ Hamarei Hazrat bohot saadah partei tei leikin unki qira’at mei dard taa Translation: Our Hazrat would read in a very simple manner, but there was a sorrow in his recitation Mufti Shabbir Sb then told us that when Shaykh Zakariyya Kandehlawi rahimahullah came to perform I’tikaf in Darul Uloom Bury, Shaykh Yusuf would lead the Fajr salah which would prompt Shaykh Zakariyya to refer to him as Qari Yusuf. Mufti Shabbir Sb told us that although the average person may not find the recitation a ‘Qira’ah’, there was a sorrow within the recitation that prompted Shaykh Zakariyya to refer to Shaykh Yusuf as Qari Yusuf.

Sharḥ al-Qawā’id al-Fiqhiyyah (شرح القواعد الفقهية) by Shaykh Aḥmad al-Zarqā’ and Al-Madkhal al-Fiqhī al-ʿĀm (المدخل الفقهي العام) by Shaykh Muṣṭafā Aḥmad al-Zarqā These are two incredibly important books for Iftā’ students. I am currently teaching the latter for Shaykh Muṣṭafā’s section on ʿUrf in Al-Madkhal al-Fiqhī al-ʿĀm, as well as his section on Qawā’id wherein he summarises his father’s Sharḥ al-Qawā’id al-Fiqhiyyah. I use Shaykh Muṣṭafā’s section on Qawā’id as my base text in class and his father’s Sharḥ al-Qawā’id for further reading.
