A study of 200 secondary students in Awi Zone found that using AI-enabled learning tools was associated with stronger academic performance and psychological well-being. Researchers say the benefits should come with teacher support, digital access and attention to students’ wellbeing.
The study captured a single point in time, so it shows an association, not proof that AI caused the gains.

| 9 |  +1<b>Ethiopia’s digital classrooms are getting a next chapter.</b>
A six-year UNESCO–Huawei project has ended after supporting 24 secondary schools and reaching about 12,000 students and 250 educators. It trained more than 350 educators and created 150 digital learning resources focused on science and English.
The next step: test and refine those resources before wider use. Ethiopia is also preparing a 2026/27–2030 digital education plan, with priorities including interactive textbooks, connectivity and AI pilots.
More tech in class, but the real upgrade still depends on teachers having the tools and training to use it well.

• 41 of 44 departments are implementing blended courses.
• Geography and Environmental Studies offers one fully online course.
• The university is developing an online teaching platform with Arizona State University.
The university’s update says the initiative supports self-paced learning and digital skills. It is dated January 19, 2026.

The Ministry of Education has sent a circular to all public universities on January 7, 2019, signed by Minister Berhanu Negga (Ph.D.), regarding "student enrollment, field of study allocation, and student transfer procedures."
The circular outlines the procedures that universities must follow regarding student enrollment, field of study allocation, and student transfers.
It states that universities cannot independently enroll students, change a student's assigned institution, or improperly register a student who has been assigned to another institution, except for the results of allocations issued by the Ministry.
Universities cannot change a student's field of study based on individual requests, special orders, or special procedures applied to a single student, unless it is outside the established allocation criteria.
Student transfers between universities can only take place with the agreement of both the sending and receiving universities, and the Ministry of Education must be notified in writing when such a transfer is completed.
The circular also states that a transfer request will only be considered if the student has completed at least one semester at the assigned institution and has not completed more than 50 percent of the program.
Furthermore, transfers from public to private higher education institutions are possible, but transfers from private to public universities are not permitted. (The full circular is provided above.)

| 14 | The Technical and Vocational Education and Training Institute is preparing to enroll and train students in remedial programs for natural science fields during the 2019 academic year.
Students who come from outside of Addis Ababa and are enrolled in the institute's remedial program will receive food and accommodation services. Students who come from Addis Ababa will only receive food services.
