AN EMOTIONLESS COMMITMENT TO TRUTH
One characteristic every student of knowledge has to acquire is the ability to engage in the various issues (masaʾil) without being moved by emotion. This is especially important for the qadi and the mufti, but also equally important to everyone else. In a famous hadith, the Holy Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “Your love of a thing makes you blind and deaf.” Emotions cloud judgement and affect one’s ability to soundly engage with differing viewpoints in order to reach the truth. One such example of emotionless work is that of Imam al-Quduri in his al-Tajrid where he comments: “Our shaykh Abu ʿAbdillah said [such and such], and that is a mistake.” One’s commitment should always be to truth, not personalities. Respect your teachers and those who came before you, but beware of mere parroting. Correction and honest commitment to the truth is nasiha, not bad adab. May Allah Most High grant us tawfiq, amin!

| 4 | A PRESENTATION ON IBN `ABIDIN AND HIS HASHIYA
A heartfelt [two-part] presentation on al-Imam Muhammad Amin b. `Abidin (d. 1252) and his famous gloss (hashiya) by the Damascene scholar, Shaykh Muhammad Wa'il al-Hanbali. Many beautiful and beneficial points. I would highly encourage giving it a listen. (FYI, the presentation is in Arabic but YT now has a feature where you can add subtitles in your language)

| 5 | TRUST ME BRO. NO BRO, TRUST ISSUES.
In the Fatāwā, it is stated that if he appoints someone to marry him to a woman, and the agent marries him to a blind woman, or to an ugly woman who has constant drooling, a crooked side, and impaired intellect, the marriage is valid according to Abū Ḥanīfa. (AI)

| 6 | A NOTE ON QUESTIONS
“In the age of AI, the questions you ask are more important than the answers you know.”
AI has democratised access to [not necessarily correct but nevertheless] answers but questions remain elusive. It can always answer your need for questions, but–from this perspective–the question is now what distinguishes man from machine. | 572 |
| 7 | A COMPLETION OF THE MATLAʿ AL-BADRAYN
As we come to the end of the term, our class just wrapped a reading and study of this interesting text [draft published in-house] titled, Matlaʿ al-badrayn fi ma yataʿallaq bi al-zawjayn. As the title suggests, it is a work geared towards spouses and it attempts to address the fiqh pertaining to spousal rights; it also covers creed, the basic fiqh of worship, and sections on financial maintenance and child custody, as well as many scatterings of advice and the wisdom of the ancients. In a time where many have become enchanted by the great liberal revolution, the text offers a window into a life coloured by Sunna. It is not necessarily about the specifics of what he transmits, but about the universal truths about men, women, and relationships, recognised by the many generations and nations who have proceeded us. May Allah Most High grant us insight, amin! | 601 |

| 9 | THE DUTY TO SPREAD SACRED KNOWLEDGE
Imam Malik has a serious statement whereby he expressed that the scholars will be asked about their spreading of knowledge just as the prophets will be asked. And some of the scholars have expressed that traversing the bridge on the Day of Resurrection is actually happening right now given that it is in accordance with actions. Thus the student of knowledge should take heed; if he has reached the stage in his journey of spreading knowledge, then he is being asked about it in the present moment and his spreading [or lack of it] are his answer. Imam Abu Hanifa also remarked that one has not fulfilled his duty as a person of knowledge until he spreads ʿilm publicly and openly. Whoever finds the good, let him thank Allah; and whoever finds other than that, let him only blame himself. May Allah Most High inspire us to the good, amin! | 989 |

| 13 | WHEN MUM’S WITH YOU BUT YOU’RE A BOSS FAQIH
The fuqaha are real people and the questions they discuss have real-world implications for them too. I always find it interesting when they mention something about themselves in their books as sometimes it is information that you cannot find in standard biographies. What follows below is [paraphrased] from Ibn Nujaym (d. 970) in his al-Bahr al-raʾiq:
“I didn’t find the ruling pertaining to this issue and it actually happened to me when I went with my Mum for the hajj, and it’s obvious that it would be fine to do that.”

| 15 | THE #FIQH OF BUILDING A LIBRARY
Students who are serious about their ʿilm journey should acquire books–the benefit you get from a physical book cannot be underestimated (using Shamela or any digital edition should be considered a dispensation). However, one should also adopt a sound method in book acquisition so that one’s library actually becomes one of a talib al-ʿilm and not simply a muhibb al-ʿilm. Otherwise, haphazard purchasing leads to haphazard ʿilm. Book-buying should purposeful and measured, and not simply a following of one’s whim and a dopamine hit. When dunya is what drives us, we have only set ourselves up for failure.
The preconditions for purchasing a book are as follows:
(1) one is reasonably able to afford it;
(2) one is reasonably sure that they will use the book, sooner or later;
(3) one is reasonably able to store the book in a dignified place.
Thereafter, it is:
obligatory: to purchase the central, authoritative texts (mutun) in the subject, including their important commentaries (shuruh);
recommended: to purchase glosses (hawashi), supplementary texts (rasaʾil), and the like;
permitted: to purchase books which provide historical context, those which are of general benefit, or those which have secondary, supplementary value;
disliked: to purchase books which contain blameworthy knowledge, or those which contain knowledge one is not ready for, and the like;
impermissible: to purchase books for reasons of ostentation or conceit, for the purposes of arguing with scholars, or for humiliating the unlearned.
There is also a fiqh within each category. Hence, purchasing a shorter text should be given precedence to a larger, voluminous one, or purchasing a commentary of a primer (matn) over purchasing another primer altogether, unless one is studying or reviewing the latter. So simply purchasing some newly published gloss or a generic work before acquiring an important, central text is mere folly. The upshot is that one should consult, if unsure, especially when there are multiple editions of texts on the market, and when many new texts are hitting the shelves all the time. There is a fiqh to everything.
Of course, this is a perspective, and many nuances and details have been omitted here for brevity. May Allah grant us the tawfiq to benefit from the works of the ʿulama, amin! | 792 |

فقال أبو حنيفة: لو كنتَ أعلم منّي لما تكلّمتَ خلال صلاتك.

| 20 | THE FIQH OF THE PRAYER: SHURUT AL-SALAT
There are a number of well-accepted writings on the fiqh of the prayer whose authors are unknown for one reason or another. Amongst those works is the Shurut al-salat, a text which has a couple of different basic versions–and numerous commentaries, including one published last year by Ibn Kamal Pasha (d. 940)–and has been a staple part of curricula in places such as Tatarstan and Afghanistan. There aren’t too many details regarding its sources except for the fact that it was apparently summarised from the al-Mabsut. I’m pleased to share that a draft annotated edition of this work is now in very limited print (not publicly accessible at the moment, unfortunately). I have previously taught this work and I look forward to more opportunities to do so in the future, and I hope that this contribution will be a means of reconnecting us with the legacies of our forefathers in ʿilm. May Allah Most High grant facilitation, amin! | 953 |
