The line graph compares five different leisure activities in terms of their popularity among US senior citizens between 1980 and 2010. Units are measured in percentages. Although there were minor disparities, overall, all pastimes rose in popularity over time, with the exception of theatre, which generally declined but saw a recovery towards the end of the period. Of particular interest is hiking participation, which experienced substantial growth, overtaking TV watching to become the most popular hobby for the elderly in the US. The favourite pursuits of senior Americans underwent significant shifts over the three decades in question. In 1980, a remarkable 60% of older people watched television in their free time. After an initial increase to a high of 70% in 2000, this figure then experienced a slight dip, concluding the period at about 65% in 2010. Theatre attendance, on the other hand, followed a contrasting trajectory. Although it decreased from 50% to 30% in the first two decades, it then recovered to approximately 45% by the close of the period. Reading habits changed quite radically during this period. Starting at 30% in 1980, the proportion of senior reading enthusiasts went up to 40% in 1990 followed by a sudden decline to 20% later. From the 2000s onwards, however, a rebound occurred, surpassing theatre attendance and reaching a peak of 60% at the end. The popularity of both hiking and internet surfing grew dramatically. Hiking participation, initially at a mere 20%, saw a consistent rise, exceeding all previous levels and peaking at an impressive 80% in 2010. A similar pattern played out when it comes to internet surfing. While it began at just 5% in the first year, it climbed to roughly 15% by 2000 before experiencing a sharp rise to overtake theatre attendance and end the period at 50%.Suhrobjon Abdivaliyev @WRITING_T

| 5 | Some people think it is harmful for people to watch advertisements, others think it improves our lives. Discuss both views and give your own.
In an era marked by materialism and consumerism, the question of whether advertising harms or benefits consumers remains highly controversial. While advertisements play a crucial role in informing the public about different goods and services, I believe that they do more harm than good, especially in terms of psychological well-being and financial stability.
Without a doubt, marketing campaigns offer valuable information and raise consumer awareness. When people come across a wide range of advertisements on television programs, social media platforms, and street billboards, they discover newly launched products, compare competing brands, and evaluate various alternatives, allowing them to make well-informed purchasing decisions that align with their preferences, needs, and circumstances. This significantly reduces the risk of wasting money and experiencing buyer's remorse. The informative nature of advertising is especially beneficial for budget-conscious individuals, who rely on TV commercials, social media ads, and other types of marketing to identify genuine bargains, time-limited discounts, and affordable items.
However, in my view, the potential downsides of advertising deserve more recognition. From a psychological perspective, a large number of modern marketers use manipulative strategies such as artificial scarcity and fake social proof to create unrealistic expectations, suggesting that only certain products and services can bring lasting satisfaction and happiness. When people, especially highly impressionable younger generations, are constantly exposed to these deceptive messages, they tend to feel dissatisfied with their lives, leading to chronic stress and anxiety. This becomes even worse when the advertised product or service fails to deliver the promised sense of fulfillment, giving rise to feelings of disappointment and regret.
From a financial point of view, the negative impact of advertising is even more profound. As people encounter persuasive marketing campaigns such as celebrity endorsements that promote luxury items and glorify extravagant lifestyles, they tend to make impulsive and irrational purchases that strain their budgets and steadily deplete their savings. As a result, they rely heavily on credit cards and loans, perpetuating a vicious cycle of overspending and financial instability. Take my country — Uzbekistan, where ubiquitous ads and commercials encourage people of all ages to splurge on designer clothes, flashy accessories, and expensive gadgets, slowly draining their wallets.
In conclusion, although advertising helps consumers learn about available products and services, its psychological manipulation and encouragement of excessive spending make it more harmful than beneficial.
