| 12 | Why Did Nifty Spike Sharply at the Close Today?
Nifty jumped nearly 75–80 points in the final minutes, but this should not be interpreted as sudden broad-based buying.
🔹 Monthly F&O expiry: Today was the August monthly expiry, making closing prices particularly important for derivatives settlement.
🔹 Closing Auction Session (CAS): Regular trading ends at 3:15 PM, after which the new closing auction mechanism determines the final prices of eligible stocks.
🔹 Low liquidity + large orders: During the auction, relatively large orders can significantly move the equilibrium prices of heavyweight Nifty stocks.
🔹 Impact on Nifty: Since Nifty is influenced heavily by large-cap stocks, changes in their auction closing prices can cause a sharp move in the index—even without equivalent buying during normal trading hours.
👉 Therefore, today's last-minute spike should be viewed mainly as a CAS + expiry-related move, not necessarily as confirmation of a strong market breakout.

US bond yields have been rising continuously. The US government announced a bond buyback programme last week, but despite this, bond yields are still moving higher.
When bond yields rise, the cost of financing and refinancing government debt increases. This can put pressure on the US dollar & dollar is getting weaker.
Generally, the relationship between the dollar and gold is:
Strong Dollar → Gold Weak
Weak Dollar → Gold Strong
This is one of the factors supporting the recent rise in gold prices.
The Nifty50 is struggling and is now very close to the 24,000 level.
As I have said earlier, if the Nifty50 falls below 24,000, we could see panic selling in small- and mid-cap stocks, particularly from retail investors.
The Nifty50 is underperforming because several major large-cap stocks, including HDFC Bank, Reliance Industries and TCS, are also underperforming. FIIs are currently showing no interest in large-cap stocks, which is keeping the Nifty50 under pressure.
Interestingly, small- and mid-cap indices are showing strong underlying strength and are ready for the next move higher. However, continued weakness in the Nifty50 is putting pressure on the broader market as well.
