Review:
The romance was the main reason I was reading this book, and on that front, it definitely delivered. I really liked Harry and Iain's dynamic and relationship; they had me giggling and kicking my feet in excitement.
The two main characters are fleshed out and distinct, and very much likeable. These two and their relationship are what mostly carried the book.
The plot, though? Hmm. Interesting at best. The pacing was weird, with some scenes dragging on and on, while what you'd expect to take several pages would just fly by. And I got genuinely bored in a couple of chapters.
The book does a pretty good job with the atmosphere of medieval England, but not necessarily with the historical backdrop. What I actually enjoyed about the historical side was the stuff I could experience through the context of the story: the lives of English knights, tournaments, jousting, squiring, training, etc. That stuff was genuinely fun.
There was also a lot of historical/political information being thrown at me in the second half, especially about the French campaigns. And honestly, I forgot most of what it said before reaching the end of the sentence.
I'd much rather have been given enough pieces of information to construct my own understanding than just be told what happened and have the book move on. I don't like telling over showing, and a lot of the political figures ended up feeling more like cogs needed to carry the plot somewhere than people who were actually relevant.
I also think the book takes court politics way too lightly; there are things that happen where I'm sitting there thinking, “there is absolutely no way everyone would just move on from this,” because someone's general circumstances should've been affected by it much more seriously. Instead, the book kind of says "Yeah! Anyways!" and moves on.
I didn't like how obvious it became that the book is catering to a modern audience when it gets to the smut. The sex scenes are indulgent and a little too back-to-back, to the point where some of them started feeling boring. They are well-written, though, and honestly could've been much more impactful and enjoyable if there weren't so many of them. The contrast is also pretty noticeable because the book spends so much time establishing this serious medieval atmosphere, and then suddenly the sex scenes have this very obvious modern air to them.
And the ending was... really clichéd. Don't get me wrong, I loved the actual conclusion of the story. My problem is with the execution and the delivery of it. I think the ending and especially the epilogue leaned more into general cliché instead of taking advantage of the emotional weight the story had built up and letting the ending be genuinely heartwarming because of it. I expected a better emotional payoff, after everything.
So overall:
Do I think the romance is good? Absolutely.
Did I enjoy the book overall? Very much.
Would I recommend it? If you're here for the romance, yes. If you're here for a strong historical plot or political drama, probably not. | 49 |
