The Justice Department has issued at least three dozen new subpoenas and document preservation requests as part of its probe into the Alaska Senate race, a U.S. official confirmed to NBC News on Thursday. The subpoenas were sent to Democrat Mary Peltola’s Senate campaign offices and those of former schoolteacher Dan J. Sullivan, who is also running for Senate. The move comes the same day Gov. Mike Dunleavy announced that he is ordering an investigation into Peltola’s campaign following a report that it worked with allies to recruit a candidate with the same name as incumbent Republican Dan Sullivan in an effort to siphon his votes. The Department of Public Safety will seek to determine “whether this scheme violated Alaska’s laws and whether criminal charges or civil action are warranted,” Dunleavy said in an overnight post to X. “The evidence will determine what happens next.” Dunleavy, a Republican, referred to Wednesday’s revelations from a bombshell New York Times report as “disturbing new evidence” and said that “anyone or any organization found to have broken the law must be held accountable.” Alaska’s Department of Public Safety Deputy Commissioner Austin McDaniel said Thursday that the Alaska Bureau of Investigation had started looking into the “alleged conduct in a recent New York Times article,” at Dunleavy’s request. “The Alaska State Troopers are committed to the fair and impartial enforcement of Alaska’s criminal laws, including those that protect the integrity of our elections. Brett Sylvia was fired this week by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth for the alleged misconduct, which the career soldier acknowledged on video after he failed four polygraph tests, a U.S. official said. "He had trouble passing multiple polygraph interviews," the report said. The report accused the general of making "unauthorized disclosures to the media," and said he "was cooperative with answering questions about interactions with the media to resolve this, and provided his personal phone for a forensics examination." The report and U.S. officials said that Sylvia's leaking began as early as June 2025 — before mainstream media outlets were removed from the Pentagon — and continued afterward via secure Signal app and once at a Silver Diner in Arlington, Va. Netanyahu appears to be trying to spook the opposition bloc out of cooperating with Arab parties to form a new government. But the opposition is concerned he has an even more ambitious goal: To prevent the results from being certified at all. That would block the swearing in of a new parliament, in which he would lose his majority. Netanyahu and his Likud party started the campaign to delegitimize the Arab vote days before the elections. Half of Netanyahu's social media posts on Election Day cast suspicion on the unprecedented turnout in Arab communities, an apparent attempt to drive his supporters to the polls. The Defense Department reportedly is sending a Patriot missile defense system to Israel as concerns grow that American and Israeli forces are preparing for a large-scale attack on Iran following next month’s midterm elections in the U.S. The system is being sent from Texas to bolster Israel’s defenses, The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday, citing two unidentified officials and flight tracking data.
