And do not think that Islam spread solely by the sword (i.e., military expansion), as some people imagine. Rather, it spread through these manners which the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, may Allahโ€™s blessings and peace be upon him, possessed โ€” those whom he raised with the finest upbringing upon the highest and most noble character. Its roots are knowledge, awareness, and certainty; its trunk is sincerity (ikhlฤแนฃ); its branches are righteous deeds; and its fruits are the beneficial effects that result from those deedsโ€”praiseworthy qualities, virtuous traits, noble character, upright demeanor, noble conduct (hady), and commendable bearing. ููŽูŠูุณู’ุชูŽุฏูŽู„ูู‘ ุนูŽู„ูŽู‰ ุบูŽุฑู’ุณู ู‡ูฐุฐูู‡ู ุงู„ุดูŽู‘ุฌูŽุฑูŽุฉู ูููŠ ุงู„ู’ู‚ูŽู„ู’ุจู ูˆูŽุซูุจููˆุชูู‡ูŽุง ูููŠู‡ู ุจูู‡ูฐุฐูู‡ู ุงู„ู’ุฃูู…ููˆุฑู. He does not wake up except that the angel says: โ€˜O Allah, forgive Your servant so-and-so, for he went to bed in a state of purity.โ€™โ€ Authentication: Reported by Ibn Hibban in his Sahih, and Shaykh Al-Albani (may Allah have mercy on him) graded it as hasan li-ghayrihi (sound due to supporting chains). Explanation of key terms: โ€ข โ€œHis garmentโ€ (shiโ€˜ฤr): With the shฤซn pronounced with a kasrah (i.e., shiโ€˜ฤr), refers to whatever directly touches a personโ€™s body, such as clothing, blanket, or sheet. Benefits of the Hadith: โ€ข Encouragement to sleep in a state of purity (with wudooโ€™), as doing so brings about the companionship of an angel who continually supplicates for forgiveness throughout the night. โ€ข Highlights the virtue of maintaining wudooโ€™ before sleep, due to the immense reward associated with it. Important Note: It is recommended (mustahabb) for a Muslim to go to sleep in a state of wudooโ€™. If one loses their wudooโ€™ during sleep, the virtue remains, because the key is being pure at the time of falling asleep, not during the entire sleep.
