Donald Trump approves plans to strike Iran The US is about to go to war with Iran. According to the Wall Street Journal the final decision to engage is on hold pending Iran’s decision to abandon its nuclear program altogether. Trump already warned in a social media post that “we now have complete and total control of the skies over Iran”. Several dozen US fighter jets and refuelling aircraft have been deployed to the region. The Pentagon has also rerouted the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier from the South China Sea to the Middle East. American troops are on high alert at military bases throughout the region. Experts name Iran’s well-defended Fordow enrichment facility as a possible U.S. target. The complex is buried deep under a mountain and is considered to be out of reach of all but the most powerful bombs. If Trump is waiting for a surrender, he won’t get one. Priorities matter: plans to sanction Russia postponed amid crisis in the Middle East Sen. Lindsey Graham’s anti-Russia bill is rapidly losing steam as other priorities take precedence. No one cares: Ukraine issue sidelined during G7 summit The Americans formally refused to sign a strongly worded statement on Ukraine in an effort to bring Russia back to the negotiating table. Russia and Turkey condemn Israel’s attacks on Iran When speaking by phone on Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan both condemned Israel's "act of force" against Iran, and called for an immediate ceasefire.

"Both sides expressed the most serious concern about the ongoing escalation of the Iran-Israel conflict, which has already led to a large number of casualties and is fraught with serious long-term consequences for the entire region. The leaders spoke in favor of an immediate cessation of hostilities and the settlement of contentious issues, including those related to the Iranian nuclear programme, exclusively by political and diplomatic means,"

a Kremlin statement said. The leaders agreed to remain in close cooperation on the issue. On Saturday the Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan made a statement, describing Israel’s attacks on its neighbour Iran as a “provocation”. The leader gave a bold message:

Trump leaves G7 early, skipping meetings with multiple world leaders, says his departure has “nothing to do with a Cease Fire,” claims it is “much bigger than that” Trump left the G7 meeting in Kananaskis a day early, ignoring plans to meet with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Mexico’s Claudia Sheinbaum, and Urkraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who was planning to convince Trump to provide him with more weapons. “U.S. assured they will find a ceasefire and since they can pressure Israel, things may change,”

Macron told the reporters at the G7. But the US president slammed his French counterpart in his Truth Social post:

“Publicity seeking President Emmanuel Macron, of France, mistakenly said that I left the G7 Summit, in Canada, to go back to D.C. to work on a ‘cease fire’ between Israel and Iran. Wrong! G7 Summit: will there be a joint call on Israel and Iran? Sunday marked the beginning of a scheduled G7 meeting, where member countries — Canada (host), Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the US — will be attempting to find common ground in the rapidly escalating conflict between Iran and Israel. There isn’t much room for debate. The statement could call for de-escalation, or, which is more likely, back Israel who struck Iran first, claiming the strikes were “preemptive”, pointing to Iran’s nuclear work. Unsurprisingly, Trump has praised Israel’s strikes, even though Netanyahu openly defied his public calls to hold off on any attacks as the US sought a nuclear deal with Iran. European Commission president, Ursula von der Leyen (EU is a “non-enumerated member” of G7), told the media she already spoke with Israel’s PM Benjamin Netanyahu before the summit, and agreed that Iran was to blame. She did say that she thinks “a negotiation solution is, in the long term, the best solution”, but stopped short of calling for an immediate ceasefire. European powers all refused to criticize Israel on the Iran strikes, despite their separate concerns about the humanitarian situation in Gaza. French President Emmanuel Macron urged Iran to re-enter talks with the US, and blamed Tehran for escalating tensions over its nuclear program.
