Carbosulfan Insecticide
📍 Why in News?
🟢 The Agriculture Ministry has proposed a complete ban on Carbosulfan, citing serious risks to human health and the environment.
🟢 The proposal is based on recommendations of experts under the Insecticides Act, 1968.
📍 What is Carbosulfan?
🟢 It is a broad-spectrum systemic carbamate insecticide, also used as an acaricide and nematicide.
🟢 It acts as a neurotoxin by inhibiting the enzyme acetylcholinesterase (AChE) in pests.
🟢 This causes accumulation of acetylcholine, disrupting the nervous system and leading to paralysis.
📍 Major Uses
🟢 Paddy: Controls stem borers, gall midges and green leafhoppers.
🟢 Cotton: Used against aphids, jassids, thrips and whiteflies.
🟢 Horticultural & Cash Crops: Used in fruits, vegetables, sugarcane and groundnuts.
📍 Key Features
🟢 Systemic & contact action: Can be absorbed by plant roots and foliage and acts against different types of insect pests.
🟢 AChE inhibitor: Interferes with normal nerve transmission by inhibiting acetylcholinesterase.
🟢 Pro-pesticide: Carbosulfan can metabolise into carbofuran, a highly toxic compound.
🟢 Formulations: Commonly available as Emulsifiable Concentrates (EC) and Granules (G).
📍 Why is a Ban Proposed?
🟢 Toxic metabolite: Rapid conversion into carbofuran raises concerns due to its high toxicity.
🟢 Human health risks: Exposure can cause serious neurotoxic effects, particularly among farmers and agricultural workers.
🟢 Impact on wildlife: Can harm birds, honeybees and other non-target organisms.
🟢 Aquatic pollution: Agricultural runoff can contaminate surface water and groundwater, posing risks to fish and aquatic invertebrates.

🟢 Located in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, Sarnath is one of the four principal Buddhist pilgrimage sites associated with the life of Gautama Buddha.

🟢 The sermon is known as Dharmachakra Pravartana or the “Turning of the Wheel of the Law”.
