Ethiopia to Double Electricity Exports to Kenya to 400 MW Ethiopia is set to double its contracted electricity supply to Kenya from 200 MW to 400 MW, with the additional power expected to begin reaching Kenya in December 2026, according to Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP). Kenya has become Ethiopia’s largest electricity export customer, with imports reaching 1,584.45 GWh in the year ended June 2026—about 10% of Kenya Power’s total electricity supply. Kenya generated 15.62 billion birr in revenue for EEP during the 2025/26 fiscal year, making it one of EEP’s largest customer segments. The 1,045-km Ethiopia–Kenya high-voltage transmission line, completed in 2022, has a capacity of up to 2,000 MW.  Ethiopia Cuts Date Import Bill by Over 90% as Afar Expands Date Palm Production Ethiopia’s legal date import bill has fallen from $9.8 million five years ago to $650,000 last year, according to the Ministry of Agriculture. The decline highlights growing domestic date production, with Afar remaining Ethiopia’s leading date-producing region. The government is also preparing a 10-year research and development programme to modernize date production and increase output for both domestic consumption and export.   With more than 500,000 hectares identified as potentially suitable for date palm cultivation, officials are calling for greater private investment and international partnerships in the sector.
