Ibn Baz, may Allah have mercy on him said: "The greatest blessing that Allah grants to a woman is neither a husband, nor children, nor a house. It is that she understands the meaning of Tawhid and applies it until her death, for it is this that will save her soul when everything disappears." [Majmuʿ Fatawa Rasā’il, 1/134]

I urge every person to read this piece of advice from beginning to end. Unfortunately, the day and age that we are living in, basic manners are becoming extinct, and extreme entitlement has grown more than ever. The worst part of it, is that it has become prevalent amongst those who claim to want to seek knowledge or even have the audacity to label theirselves as طلاب العلم whilst leaving behind the adornment that a true student carries; especially with his teacher. This is something that has become normalised, as more and more brothers and sisters - by the Tawfiq and permission of Allah - begin to teach and open up institutions or share from what Allah has blessed them of knowledge, unfortunately those around them assume that since he/she is not a famous shaykh living in an Arab land, with videos posted on YouTube, therefore he/she should not receive the respect deserved. “He is just like me” if he is just like you, why don’t you start teaching him instead of him teaching you!? To every student: You do not respect your teacher simply because of their name or their title, you must respect your teacher out of respect for the ‘ilm they are sharing with you. That is how you become a student of knowledge. By humbly lowering yourself to the level you actually are, by patiently exerting your efforts in showing the upmost manners and etiquette, by reading the books of the ‘ulema who teach us what it means to have manners in seeking knowledge! So a reminder to all.. do not expect yourself to go far, if you have missed the first and major step in your pursuit.

A Message Every Online Student of Knowledge Needs to Read One of the unfortunate realities among English-speaking students of knowledge today is that while access to Islamic education has become easier than ever, some of the basic manners of seeking knowledge are slowly disappearing online. You would never walk into your teacher's home, ignore his salam, demand an answer, and walk away without thanking him. Yet somehow, behind a screen, this has become normal. You message your teacher with a question. No salam. No greeting. Just a demand for an answer. Your teacher takes time to explain something to you, perhaps after hours of teaching, and you disappear without even a Jazak Allahu khayran. He sends you a beneficial reminder, a book, or a recording because he thought of you, and you don't even acknowledge it. You begin a conversation and suddenly disappear halfway through. You send lengthy voice notes while eating, driving, or surrounded by noise, expecting your teacher to struggle through them. You forward endless videos and expect him to watch and comment on every one. And in group discussions, you rush to answer questions before the teacher has even been given the opportunity to respond. Perhaps you don't consider any of this disrespectful. But bad manners are not always expressed through harsh words. Sometimes they are expressed through a lack of consideration. Your Quran teacher is not a machine that corrects your recitation. Your Islamic teacher is not a search engine waiting to answer your questions. They are human beings. They have families, responsibilities, difficulties, and feelings. Some spend ten or fourteen hours a day teaching, yet still make time for students because they sincerely want them to benefit. The Prophet ﷺ said: “He who does not thank people does not thank Allah.” (Sunan Abi Dawud 4811) It is famously reported that Imam Malik's mother told him when sending him to study with Rabi'ah: “Learn from his manners before you learn from his knowledge.” (Tartib al-Madarik 1/130) SubhanAllah. Our predecessors were concerned about learning manners before knowledge, while today some of us accumulate knowledge without allowing it to improve our manners. Dear student of knowledge, Your teacher may never complain about your behaviour. He may overlook your thoughtlessness, excuse your shortcomings, and continue teaching you with patience. But don't mistake his silence for the absence of hurt. And remember, paying for a course does not mean you have purchased unlimited access to your teacher's time or that the respect owed to him has somehow disappeared. Respect his time. Honour your commitments. Greet him properly. Thank him sincerely. Be mindful of how and when you communicate. These may seem like small things, but they reveal something far greater about your character. And perhaps the most painful thought of all is this: What if the very teacher who patiently helped you study the religion of Allah is someone whose heart you have repeatedly hurt through your manners? What benefit is there in studying the deen if its teachings have not begun to perfect our character? May Allah grant us beneficial knowledge, beautiful manners, and hearts that remain grateful to those who teach us, irrespective of whether it is online or in person. Team AMAU www.amauacademy.com

Ibn al-Dayyan was a Jewish physician who attended the gatherings of the great hadith scholar al-Hafidh al-Mizzi, as well as the gatherings of other scholars. When the scholars were recording the names of everyone who had attended a hadith lesson, they hesitated over whether they should include Ibn al-Dayyan’s name because he was Jewish. They asked Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah about this, and he told them: "Write his name." The reason for this is that being a non-Muslim did not prevent him from hearing and receiving the hadith (تحمّل الحديث). However, if he later wanted to narrate those hadiths, the necessary conditions for accepting his narration would have to be verified. So they recorded his name among those who had attended and heard the book. Interestingly, this became a means of his being guided to Islam. He eventually accepted Islam and then began narrating the hadiths he had heard from the scholars.

Imam as-Saʿdi said in his tafsir of 34:39: Then Allah reiterates that “He expands the provision for whoever He wills of His servants, and restricts it for him”, so that He may connect this to His statement: “And whatever you spend” whether it is obligatory or voluntary expenditure, upon a relative, neighbour, poor person, orphan, or anyone else: “He will replace it.” Therefore, do not imagine that spending wealth causes one’s provision to decrease. Rather, Allah has promised to replace what is spent for the one who spends, for He is the One who expands provision for whom He wills and restricts it. “And He is the best of providers.” So seek provision from Him, and strive through the means that He has commanded you to take.

One of the most common tricks of Shaytan is that he turns the blessings in your life: such as your studies, your work, your family, and your children, from sources of happiness and enjoyment into sources of anxiety, stress, and irritability. So you begin to complain about everything: the pressures and your responsibilities towards your family, even though the very things you complain about, if they didn’t exist, you would collapse and fall into depression.

Ibn Mubarak: There is nothing equivalent in reward to earning for one’s family, not even striving in the path of Allah, Mighty and Majestic.

Leave your homeland in pursuit of greatness, And travel, for in travel there are five benefits: Relief from sorrow, a means of earning a livelihood, Knowledge, refined manners, and the company of noble people. And if it is said that travel brings hardship and humiliation, وقطعُ الفيافي واكتسابُ الشدائدِ Crossing vast deserts and enduring difficulties, فموتُ الفتى خيرٌ له من حياتِهِ Then the death of a young man is better for him than a life In a land of disgrace, among slanderers and the envious.”

«لا نمدح الناس إلا بعد تجربة لا يُشترى العود إلا بعد إحراق» “We do not praise people until after experience; just as oud is not purchased until it has been burned.” This line of poetry teaches us that a person’s true character should not be judged based on first impressions alone. People should be known through experience, observation, and time before they are praised or trusted. The comparison is made to oud, a valuable fragrant wood. Buyers traditionally burn a small piece before purchasing it to test the quality of its fragrance. Its true worth is revealed only when it is put to the test. Likewise, a person’s true qualities become apparent only through real-life interactions, challenges, and experiences; and cannot be truly revealed after a few mere encounters.

O Allah, show us the truth as truth and grant us the ability to follow it, and show us falsehood as falsehood and grant us the ability to avoid it.

If a student of knowledge isolates himself from people, he is accused of being incapable, lazy, and of withholding knowledge. And if he strives to spread goodness and share knowledge, he is accused of seeking attention and causing fitnah among the masses. So you will never be safe from people’s words in every circumstance. Therefore, seek help from Allah alone, and seek His pleasure and no one else’s.
