01 🍁 Could Neanderthals talk?
✍🏻 Emily Cooke
While still the topic of ongoing debate, some scientists think Neanderthals could talk and may have had language.
Neanderthals were our closest human relatives, and they had many similarities with anatomically modern humans.
But could Neanderthals talk?
Several pieces of evidence suggest they could. But to answer this question, first it's important to distinguish between speech and language. Speech refers to the ability to verbally say sounds and words. Language is far more complex; it means using those sounds to share ideas.
Some research suggests that speech was acquired long before Homo sapiens and Neanderthals split in the evolutionary tree, sometime between 400,000 and 800,000 years ago.
Andrey Vyshedskiy, a neuroscientist at Boston University, told Live Science:
"Before modern humans split from Neanderthals, the last common ancestor already possessed articulate speech,"
One of the most convincing pieces of evidence to support this theory is that H. sapiens and Neanderthals share two evolutionary mutations in a gene called FOXP2. This gene is associated with the control of muscles in the mouth and face that help produce speech. Mutations in FOXP2 can cause language deficits in humans.
This suggests Neanderthals could make the movements associated with speech, Vyshedskiy said. But what about language?
By studying modern humans with language impairments, Vyshedskiy and colleagues have proposed that humans evolved through three different language comprehension phenotypes. The most-advanced phenotype, which is what most people have, is syntactic language. Syntactic language conveys complex narratives, uses possessive pronouns, and includes verb tenses and spatial prepositions, he said.
A less-complex language comprehension phenotype, called modifier language, includes an understanding of colors, sizes, and numbers. The least-complex language comprehension phenotype involves only the comprehension of commands, he said.
Command language comprehension phenotype likely evolved earliest in our evolutionary history, soon after the human line split from the chimpanzee line six million years ago, he said. Modifier language gradually evolved 3 million years later, as humans started to manufacture stone tools, followed by syntactic language acquisition a mere 70,000 years ago, he said.
He proposed:
"So Neanderthals were likely speaking like us, but they had a modifier language phenotype. Effectively, Neanderthals may have spoken like a 3-year-old child – well-articulated speech, but no syntactic language comprehension”
Some fossil research also supports the idea that Neanderthals had language. For example, in a 2021 study in the journal Nature Ecology & Evolution, researchers took high resolution CT scans of the bones related to hearing abilities. They determined that Neanderthals and modern humans have a greater sensitivity to some sounds in the frequency range of spoken language than do other primates.

Your feet be on my eyes
From which side the sun has risen? Did you lose your way?

06 🍁 Nominalisation
✍🏻 Canning & Walker:
A good place to find nominalisations is in journalistic discourse, where the convention is to anchor news stories on headlines that encapsulate an action or series of actions into a single noun phrase. For example, read the following BBC news headline (28 December 2022).
Murder arrests over Birmingham nightclub stabbing (BBC News 2022)
The act of murdering appears here as a modifier ‘murder’ for ‘arrests’ which is a noun derived from a verb ‘to arrest’. The stabbing of a young man is presented here as a noun (a gerund – see Chapter 2), ‘stabbing’. Such grammatical conversions may be due to discourse constraints on headline text – often, the body copy that follows makes the agency more explicit (e.g. “Two men have been arrested on suspicion of murdering a man who was stabbed to death on a nightclub dancefloor in Birmingham”, BBC News 2022).
As well as the generic constraints and conventions of news stories, police officers often use nominalisations as a way of distancing themselves from reported or unverified actions. This could be a conscious attempt to present a neutral institutional stance. For example, compare the use of the verb form ‘allege’ in ‘Victim alleges that suspect did X’ against its nominalised counterpart ‘There was an allegation of X’. In the former, the victim is the source of ‘allege’ which may imply that they are not believed or there is a lack of evidence from the victim, whereas no agent can be derived from the nominalised form ‘allegation’ and so no overt stance is taken towards the victim. Police also use nominalisations in the categorization of crimes. For example, an act of violence committed by someone towards another person is categorised as an ‘assault’ (Calligan 2000) and by doing so, the implicit grammatical transitive structure of ‘X assaulted Y’ is packaged neatly into a noun ‘assault’ which obscures not only the perpetrator of the ‘assault’ but also the victim as Figure 9.1 shows. 07 🍁 Inside the News
▪️who decide what’s newsworthy and what isn’t
✍🏻 Lewis Vaughn:
Deliberately or unconsciously, editors and reporters may skew their reporting so as not to offend their advertisers, their audience, or their stockholders. They may also moderate their reporting to keep their sources of information open. Reporters get a great deal of their news from sources such as government officials, corporate public relations people, and advocacy-group spokespersons. A reporter who irritates these sources by writing stories that they don’t like could end up being shunned by the sources. There is always the temptation, then, to craft inoffensive or watered-down stories to please the source. Not all news people give in to the temptation, but many do.
Editors and reporters are the ones who decide what’s newsworthy and what isn’t. And these decisions can help give us a clearer picture of the world or a more distorted one. The distortion can happen in several ways. First, it can arise when reporters do what we might call passive reporting. Most reporters aren’t investigative reporters, going off into the world and digging up the hard facts. Often, the news is simply handed to them by spokespersons and public relations experts hired by governments, corporations, and others who want to get their own version of the facts into the news media. In these situations, reporters may report only what they’re told at press conferences or in press releases. The result is canned news that’s slanted toward the views of the people who supply it.
Second, for a variety of reasons, publishers, editors, producers, and reporters may decide not to cover certain stories or specific aspects of a story. With so much going on in the world, some selectivity is necessary and inevitable. Too often, though, decisions not to cover something can lead the public to conclude that there is nothing happening when in fact something very important is transpiring. During the run-up to the war in Iraq, some massive anti-war protests occurred in the United States and Europe. But, at least at first, the mainstream American news media didn’t cover them, leading some observers to accuse the news media of bias in favor of the war. Likewise, some observers complain that the American news media don’t cover many international stories that news organizations in other countries cover in depth, such as famines and human rights violations in developing nations. The result, the complaint goes, is that Americans are blithely ignorant of what’s really happening in the world. Also, many times the news media forgo covering a story because they deem it too complex or too unexciting for an audience hungry for titillation, scandal, and entertainment. The police chase of a local bandit on Highway 13 may get a full hour of TV coverage, but the federal deficit’s effect on middle-income families may get two minutes, if anything.
Third, editors, reporters, and producers can dramatically alter our perception of the news by playing certain aspects up or down. Television and radio news broadcasts can make a trivial news item seem momentous just by making it the lead-off story in the broadcast. Or they can make an important story seem inconsequential by devoting only fifteen seconds to it near the end of the broadcast. Newspapers can play the same game by putting a story on the front page with a big headline and compelling photo—or embedding it on page 22 with a tiny headline. Parts of a story can also be arranged for the same effect, with the most telling information mentioned last. (Vaughn, 2016: 138 - 139)

09 🍁 Given Injustice: the Case of Derek Bentley
✍🏻 Canning & Walker:
Derek Bentley was the last man to be hanged in Britain. His crime – which he didn’t commit and was (much) later pardoned for – was the murder of a police officer. The judge made a great deal about Bentley’s (later disputed) confession, which contained the phrase “I didn’t know he was going to use the gun” (Coulthard 2006). The phrase concerns Bentley’s ‘accomplice’, Chris Craig – the person who actually murdered the officer – and the gun that Craig was carrying and used to shoot the officer. The judge claimed that if Bentley was telling the truth, that he did not know Craig had a gun, then why would he refer to it as ‘the gun’ and not ‘a gun’? The answer, of course, is that once Craig used said gun to shoot the police officer it was completely obvious to all that Craig did indeed have a gun! By using the definite phrase ‘the gun’ (even though it was the first mention in the confession), Bentley appears to be assuming, quite reasonably, that the gun is Given information because by that point, it is known to all concerned with the case. (Canning & Walker, 2024: 53)
▪️What is Given-New information?
Haviland and Clark (1974: 513) make the point that the primary purpose of language is to impart information; speakers/writers use language to tell their hearers/ readers something. That ‘something’ is typically information that the hearers/readers did not already know. However, when speakers/writers do impart information, the message will inevitably contain things that the hearers/readers do know. To communicate successfully (i.e. to impart information) speakers/writers must make assumptions about what their hearers/readers do and do not know, and they must choose their language accordingly. Information that the speaker/writer assumes is already known by their addressees is Given information, while information that is assumed not to be known is New (Brown and Yule 1983: 154) (ibid: 49)
▪️Signalling Given-New information
The status of information in discourse (i.e. the Givenness or Newness) is signalled by language choices made by the speaker/writer based on their assumptions about the hearer’s/reader’s knowledge. Information can be assumed to be known to their addressee and therefore Given if it has already been mentioned in the discourse or is physically present in the immediate context. Information can be assumed to be not known to their addressee and therefore New if it is not obvious in the context or has not already been introduced. Givenness can be (but not always) signalled by the definite article (‘the’) or pronouns, whereas Newness can be (but not always) signalled by indefinite reference, which usually involves the grammatical articles ‘a’ and ‘an’. (ibid.)

14 🍁 The Influence of English Language
✍🏻 Rodney Huddleston et al:
Almost certainly, English is now the most important language in the world. This might not have been clear even just fifty years ago, but it cannot reasonably be denied today. English is used for government business in well over sixty countries and territories around the world. By international agreement it is the primary language for all air traffic control and maritime navigation. It’s the uncontroversial choice ofofficial language for almost all international academic conferences, and increasingly the main language ofhigher education globally. The European Union is increasingly using it for conducting business even though the United Kingdom is no longer a member.
The widespread use and enormous influence of English is not due to anyone having objectively judged it to be deserving. The unique status of the language is just a side-effect of various mutually reinforcing historical trends. From the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries onward, British exploration, missionary work, imperialism, and colonial policy began to spread English around the world. The whole North American continent ultimately adopted English as its dominant language (despite important early rivals like Spanish, French, and German). India’s huge multilingual population recognized English as a subsidiary official language (alongside Hindi) for government business after independence. The twentieth century, especially after the outcomes of the first and second world wars, saw an extraordinary growth in the economic power of the USA and the British Commonwealth.
The growing importance of scientific research further strengthened the standing of English; it emerged as the language in which the majority of scientists publish their results. The economic importance of university education accentuated this effect: many universities in non-English-speaking countries allow or even require PhD dissertations to be submitted in English. And a hugely important additional factor was the global success of English-language broadcasting, publishing, songwriting, and above all film production: in Hollywood, the only place on earth where film-making budgets routinely run into the hundreds of millions of dollars, almost every film script is in English. It may not be a good thing for a single language to come so close to predominating all over the planet, but it seems to be happening. (Huddleston et al, 2022: 1; emphasis added)

More than 50 countries have English as one of their offcial languages. They include countries as widely geographically dispersed as Bangladesh, Myanmar, sudan, sierra Leone, Cyprus, Malta, The Bahamas, Vanuatu, Barbados, Namibia, and Qatar. Not everyone in those countries can speak English fuently, and not everyone uses English on a daily basis, but English is very visible in public life and in the media. Most of the countries have English as a result of their history as part of the British Empire. 🍁 Could Neanderthals talk?
"Before modern humans split from Neanderthals, the last common ancestor already possessed articulate speech,"One of the most convincing pieces of evidence to support this theory is that H. sapiens and Neanderthals share two evolutionary mutations in a gene called FOXP2.
Effectively, Neanderthals may have spoken like a 3-year-old child – well-articulated speech, but no syntactic language comprehension”Some fossil research also supports the idea that Neanderthals had language. For example, in a 2021 study in the journal Nature Ecology & Evolution, researchers took high resolution CT scans of the bones related to hearing abilities. While still the topic of ongoing debate, some scientists think Neanderthals could talk and may have had language.
Your feet be on my eyes
From which side the sun has risen? Did you lose your way?

🍁 Nominalisation
🍁 Inside the News

🍁 Given Injustice: the Case of Derek Bentley
(ibid.)
