This is called social conformity…
Bots and sockpuppets do not need to change your private belief at first. It’s not their goal. The goal is the subconscious… and They only need to make it look like the “majority” view so uncertain people update, dissenters stay quiet, and the thread starts to police itself.
The effect is stronger when the fake accounts pretend to be people like you—ordinary Americans, fellow locals, veterans, churchgoers, MAGA— because social proof works best from similar others, not obvious outsiders.
Conversations are manufactured as real U.S. voices inserted into real American arguments. Just like this clown from Sweden..
The conversation then tilts and genuine people on both sides are arguing with a chorus that was never a real public.
One of the best demonstrations of this was the Solomon Asch’s 1950s line-judgment experiments. Where the correct answer was very obvious, yet when a unanimous group gave the wrong answer first, about 75% of people conformed at least once and roughly a third of answers went with the crowd.
