India’s Outreach to the Global South Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarks on a 9-day, 5-nation tour — one of his longest overseas visits — reflecting India’s growing engagement with the Global South. Here's why it matters: Ghana (July 2–3) First bilateral visit by an Indian PM in 30 years. India is Ghana’s largest export destination, with gold being the major import. The visit aims to strengthen cooperation in trade, energy, defence, and development. Trinidad & Tobago (July 3–4) The visit coincides with 180 years of Indian immigration to T&T. With nearly half of the Indian diaspora in the Caribbean living here, the trip reflects cultural and strategic ties. Trade touched USD 341.61 million in FY 2024–25. Argentina (July 4–5) First bilateral visit by an Indian PM in 57 years. Talks with President Javier Milei will focus on defence, agriculture, mining, oil and gas, and India’s lithium needs for its energy transition. India is a top trade partner for Argentina. Brazil (July 5–8) Attending the BRICS Leaders’ Summit in Rio, followed by a State Visit to Brasilia. Key focus areas include multilateral reforms, climate action, AI governance, and deepening strategic ties in defence, energy, space, and health. Namibia (July 9) Third ever visit by an Indian PM to Namibia. From diamond trade to cheetah conservation, ties are both strategic and symbolic. Modi will address the Namibian Parliament and meet with top leadership. This tour underlines India’s push to redefine its global role and deepen South-South cooperation.
