Pakistan Takes Over UN Security Council Presidency
The Islamic Republic of Pakistan has assumed the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for July 2025, during its two-year term as a non-permanent member (2025–26).
Planned Activities:
At least two major open debates on international peace and security.
Two signature high-level events:
1️⃣ On multilateralism and peaceful settlement of disputes
2️⃣ On UN-OIC cooperation
Agenda Possibilities:
Sources suggest possible focus on:
Operation Sindoor (India’s outreach to the Gulf & West Africa)
Jammu & Kashmir issue
India is not a current UNSC member, raising concerns in Delhi that Pakistan may attempt to spotlight regional South Asian issues.
Historical Context:
This is Pakistan’s 8th time on the UNSC: 1952–53, 1968–69, 1976–77, 1983–84, 1993–94, 2003–04, 2012–13, and now 2025–26.
About UNSC Presidency:
Rotates monthly among 15 members (Rule 18, Provisional Rules of Procedure)
Based on alphabetical order (English names)
Preceded by Guyana (June) and followed by Panama (August)
Council Composition:
5 Permanent Members (P5): 🇺🇸 🇷🇺 🇨🇳 🇫🇷 🇬🇧
10 Non-permanent Members (elected for 2 years)
➤ Chosen by General Assembly via 2/3rd secret ballot
➤ Regional distribution:
• 5 from Africa & Asia
• 1 Eastern Europe
• 2 Latin America
• 2 Western Europe & Others
➤ One Arab seat alternates between Asia & Africa
UNSC Powers:
Under Chapter VI & VII of UN Charter
Can:
✔️ Impose sanctions
✔️ Authorize peacekeeping/military action
✔️ Issue binding resolutions
Oversees 11 peacekeeping missions with ~100,000 personnel (as of 2024)
Criticisms & Structural Issues:
Veto power (P5) often leads to deadlocks
Examples:
▪️ Russia: 158 vetoes
▪️ US: 92 vetoes (including on Palestine in 2024)
▪️ China: Often aligns with Russia
France & UK haven’t used veto since 1989
UNSC Reform Demands:
Calls for inclusion of India, Brazil, Germany, Japan, Nigeria, South Africa
African representation a key UN reform priority
But P5 resistance keeps reforms stalled

India’s Outreach to the Global South
Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarks on a 9-day, 5-nation tour — one of his longest overseas visits — reflecting India’s growing engagement with the Global South. Here's why it matters:
Ghana (July 2–3)
First bilateral visit by an Indian PM in 30 years. India is Ghana’s largest export destination, with gold being the major import. The visit aims to strengthen cooperation in trade, energy, defence, and development.
Trinidad & Tobago (July 3–4)
The visit coincides with 180 years of Indian immigration to T&T. With nearly half of the Indian diaspora in the Caribbean living here, the trip reflects cultural and strategic ties. Trade touched USD 341.61 million in FY 2024–25.
Argentina (July 4–5)
First bilateral visit by an Indian PM in 57 years. Talks with President Javier Milei will focus on defence, agriculture, mining, oil and gas, and India’s lithium needs for its energy transition. India is a top trade partner for Argentina.
Brazil (July 5–8)
Attending the BRICS Leaders’ Summit in Rio, followed by a State Visit to Brasilia. Key focus areas include multilateral reforms, climate action, AI governance, and deepening strategic ties in defence, energy, space, and health.
Namibia (July 9)
Third ever visit by an Indian PM to Namibia. From diamond trade to cheetah conservation, ties are both strategic and symbolic. Modi will address the Namibian Parliament and meet with top leadership.
This tour underlines India’s push to redefine its global role and deepen South-South cooperation.
