The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a new notification for Allied and Healthcare Professional courses regulated by the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP). The changes are effective from the date of publication in the Gazette.
*Key Changes for Physiotherapy*
*Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPT)**
* Duration increased from 4½ years to 5 years.
* Entry qualification remains 10+2.
*Master of Physiotherapy (MPT)**
The generic MPT degree has now been specified into the following specializations:
* MPT (Musculoskeletal Sciences)
* MPT (Neuro Sciences)
* MPT (Cardio-Pulmonary Sciences)
* MPT (Sports Sciences)
* MPT (Pediatrics & Neonatal Sciences)
* MPT (Obstetrics & Gynecology Sciences)
* MPT (Oncology Sciences)
* MPT (Community Rehabilitation Sciences)
All are 2-year Master's programmes after graduation. Universities running MPT programmes are required to restructure their courses and award degrees under these specified specializations.
*What This Means for Physiotherapy Colleges*
1. BPT programmes should now be structured as 5-year degree programmes.
2. MPT programmes should be offered and awarded under the specified specialization titles rather than a generic MPT degree.
3. These changes align physiotherapy education with the NCAHP framework and UGC-recognized degree nomenclature.
