1. ZEALOUS = passionately committed (positive)
(In context: APPROVING — initial admiration)
2. INVETERATE = long-established, deeply ingrained
(In context: CRITICAL — refusal "became" inveterate, suggesting it hardened)
3. SYCOPHANTIC = excessively flattering, insincere
(In context: CRITICAL — the inner circle was fake)

The trap IPMAT tests:
Q: "How does the author's view of the founder evolve?"
A: SHIFTS — from admiring (zealous) to critical (inveterate, sycophantic).
If you missed the shift, you'd pick "consistently admiring" or "consistently critical." Both wrong.

ZEALOUS vs FANATICAL
📍 ZEALOUS = passionately committed, enthusiastically devoted
→ Author tone: POSITIVE or NEUTRAL
→ "She was a zealous advocate for environmental protection."
📍 FANATICAL = extreme to the point of irrationality, blindly devoted
→ Author tone: NEGATIVE, often warning
→ "His fanatical pursuit of profit ignored every ethical line."
The differentiator:
ZEALOUS = passion WITH judgment
FANATICAL = passion WITHOUT judgment
Both people work very hard. Both believe deeply.
The difference: would they stop if shown they were wrong?
→ Zealous person → yes
→ Fanatical person → no
IPMAT trap: a passage might describe someone's intense effort. Tone-question asks "how does the author view this person?"
If the author uses "zealous" → they admire the dedication.
If the author uses "fanatical" → they're warning you.
Same effort. Different verdict.

AMBIGUOUS vs AMBIVALENT
📍 AMBIGUOUS = unclear, can be interpreted in multiple ways
→ about the THING/SITUATION
→ "The CEO's statement was ambiguous — nobody knew what she meant."
📍 AMBIVALENT = having mixed feelings about something
→ about the PERSON'S feelings
→ "She was ambivalent about the merger — excited and worried at once."
The killer test:
→ AMBIGUOUS = the THING is unclear
→ AMBIVALENT = YOU are conflicted
When IPMAT asks "what was the author's stance?" — if you see "ambivalent" in the answer choices, it means the AUTHOR had mixed feelings. If you see "ambiguous" — it means the author's MESSAGE was unclear.
Two completely different tone-question answers.
