| 13 |  A retired United Nations humanitarian official has lost more than KSh 14.8 million after falling victim to an elaborate romance scam linked to Kenya.
Rodrick Lodge, who spent decades working across the Horn of Africa, reportedly lost his entire life savings of more than £85,000 after being convinced he was building a new future with a woman he planned to marry.
After losing his wife of 34 years in 2019, Lodge reconnected with Mary, a woman he had known during his time working in Kenya. Mary later introduced him to Anita, who was presented as the managing director of a successful beauty products company in Nairobi.
The two developed a close relationship, and Anita allegedly convinced Lodge to finance renovations on a four bedroom house she claimed to own, sending him photos to make the project appear legitimate.
Believing he was preparing for a new life in Kenya, Lodge sold his home in the United Kingdom, emptied his savings, and moved to Nairobi in July 2024. However, upon arrival, Anita could not be found.
When Mary claimed Anita’s father had been admitted to hospital, Lodge used his former United Nations connections to verify the information. He discovered that no such patient existed and later realized the woman he trusted had never been real.
Left without money for accommodation or a flight back home, Lodge was temporarily assisted by a friend in Kitengela. Former colleagues later helped raise funds for his return ticket to the UK.
After arriving back in Britain, Lodge found himself homeless after having already sold his house. He spent several nights sleeping at Heathrow Airport before moving between shelters.
He now lives in rented accommodation and depends on his pension, with reports indicating he is sometimes left with only about £20, roughly KSh 3,500, each month after paying his rent. | 6 873 |
