Heron Alexandrinus, or the Hero of Alexandria, was a Greek born in 10AD. Heron was a mathematician and an engineer considered to be one of the greatest inventors during the era in which he lived. Heron was one of the first known inventors of the steam engine, a steam powered device that was called aeolipile or the ‘Heron engine’. Heron gave detailed instructions for manufacturing more than 78 devices in his book Pneumatica.
