🌍 International Gibbon Day - Spotlight on the Western Hoolock Gibbon 🐒
This International Gibbon Day, we turn our attention to the Western Hoolock Gibbon, India’s only ape species and one of the world’s most endangered primates. With fewer than 3,000 left in India, this species faces a serious fight for survival. 🌱
📜 Scientific Name: Hoolock hoolock
🌎 Habitat: From moist deciduous to evergreen forests across Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, and Assam.
🌲 Arboreal Masters: Known for their brachiation, these gibbons can leap 10-12 meters between trees at speeds over 50 km/h! 🐒
Unique Traits:
The Western Hoolock Gibbon pairs for life, bonding through distinctive "hook-o, hook-o, hook-o" calls 🎶 that mark their territory from up to a kilometre away! 🗣
🍃 Diet & Survival:
Omnivorous by nature, they feast on over 100 species of plants, some invertebrates, and bird eggs. But with habitat loss and hunting pressures, their numbers have dropped by 90% in the last 30 years. 🚨
⚖️ Conservation Status:
IUCN: Endangered
CITES: Appendix I
Wildlife Protection Act: Schedule 1 in India
🏞 Hollangapar Gibbon Sanctuary:
This sanctuary, the last stronghold for these apes in Assam, is home to Bengal slow lorises, 219 bird species, and rare mammals like the stump-tailed macaque and Indian elephants. 🌿

🌊 Life in Hydrothermal Vents 🌋
🐠 What are Hydrothermal Vents?
Hydrothermal vents are seabed fissures releasing geothermally heated water, found near volcanic areas and tectonic boundaries, where life thrives without sunlight.
🔥 How Do Hydrothermal Vents Work?
Superheated by magma, mineral-rich seawater rises through the ocean’s crust, mixing with cooler water and forming deposits that sustain a unique ecosystem.
🔬 Chemosynthesis: At hydrothermal vents, organisms rely on chemosynthesis, where bacteria convert vent chemicals into energy, forming the base of a unique food chain.
🧪 Recent Exploration with SuBastian 🛠
Scientists using the SuBastian vehicle discovered animals like tubeworms, crabs, and shrimp, beneath deep-sea hydrothermal vents at the East Pacific Rise( living underground, within the crust where the ocean is 1.56 miles deep).
🐛 Tubeworms: Bacteria living inside their bodies convert sulfur into energy, allowing them to survive in this harsh environment.

🚨 E. coli Outbreak in the US 🍔🚨
🦠 What is E. coli?
E. coli (Escherichia coli) is a rod-shaped, gram-negative bacterium commonly found in the intestines of humans and mammals. While most strains are harmless and aid digestion, some can cause serious foodborne illnesses.
❓ How does E. coli spread?
🍽Contaminated food, water, and undercooked meat + unpasteurized beverages and fecal-oral transmission.
❓ What are the symptoms?
⚠️ High fever (>102°F) 🌡
Persistent and bloody diarrhea 💧
Vomiting 🤢
Dehydration
In severe cases, E. coli can cause acute kidney injury.
❓ What’s the most dangerous strain?
🔴 Enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) produces Shiga toxin, which causes bloody diarrhea and can lead to life-threatening kidney failure and Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS).
❓ How is it treated?
💊 Antibiotics are prescribed, but indiscriminate use can lead to antimicrobial resistance. In India, E. coli's resistance to strong antibiotics like carbapenems has significantly worsened—from 81.4% in 2017 to 62.7% in 2023.
❓ How common is E. coli in India?
📊 According to the National Centre for Disease Control, over 500 outbreaks of diarrheal diseases were reported across India in 2023. E. coli was found in 23.19% of patient samples from tertiary care hospitals, according to ICMR’s Antimicrobial Surveillance Network.
