🌊 Marine Heat Waves (MHWs) - A Rising Oceanic Concern 🌡
🔍Why in News?
Deep ocean MHWs are mainly driven by eddy currents, not atmospheric changes.
Marine Heat Waves (MHWs) are becoming more frequent and intense, posing significant threats to marine ecosystems. Recent research reveals that deep ocean MHWs may be under-reported, driven by ocean currents and global warming.
What are MHWs?
When sea surface temperatures rise 3-4°C above the average for at least 5 days, it leads to MHWs.
They can occur in any season, anywhere in the ocean, and span up to thousands of kilometers.
🌍 Causes:
Surface heat flux: Long-lasting high-pressure systems heat the surface.
Ocean currents: Warmer water moves into regions.
Climate change: 87% of MHWs are linked to human-induced warming.
⚠️ Impacts:
Coral deaths, fisheries collapse, extreme weather events, and socioeconomic challenges for coastal communities.

🗻 Roopkund Lake 🌍❄️
📰 Why in the News?
The iconic Roopkund Lake, also known as the "Lake of Skeletons", in Uttarakhand is now shrinking year by year, driven by the effects of climate change. 🌿🏔
🔹 About Roopkund Lake
Located at an elevation of 16,500 feet, this glacial lake lies at the base of Mt. Trishul in the Garhwal Himalayas. Despite being just 130 feet wide, it remains frozen for most of the year and is surrounded by snow-capped peaks and green meadows. 🌸🏞
🔍 The Mystery of Skeletons
Roopkund earned its eerie nickname because of the human skeletons found at its bottom, dating back to the 9th century AD. These skeletal remains become visible when the snow melts.
A 2019 study revealed that these skeletons came from genetically diverse groups, perishing over a span of 1,000 years. 💀
Way Forward
1. Promoting sustainable Tourism
2. Local conservation
3. Glacier Monitor and Research
4. Water Resource Management
5. International Cooperation
