Rita Levi-Montalcini (1909–2012)
Rita Levi-Montalcini was born on 22 April 1909 in Turin, Italy.
despite opposition from her father, who believed women should focus on family life rather than careers, she chose to study medicine.
during the Second World War, anti-Jewish laws prevented her from working in universities. she responded by building a small laboratory in her bedroom, where she continued her research in secret. after the war, Levi-Montalcini discovered nerve growth factor (NGF), a protein that plays a crucial role in the growth and survival of nerve cells. this discovery transformed neuroscience and greatly improved scientists' understanding of how the nervous system develops. her research has influenced studies into Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, cancer, and many other neurological conditions. in 1986, she received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. she died on 30 December 2012, aged one hundred and three.
