Day 9 of 10 Key Environment Terms Series Altitude Squeeze This is a climate change impact term describing how warming temperatures in mountain ranges like the Himalayas force cold-adapted species to shift upslope into ever-smaller, more fragmented habitat patches at the top of their range. Because there is often no higher ground left to move into, populations face habitat loss, reduced genetic diversity, and potential local extinctions. Examples: Cold-adapted species like musk deer, pheasants and snow trout are being forced to migrate upslope into smaller and more fragmented refugia.

Day 8 Key Environment Terms Borealisation: Borealisation refers to the expansion of temperate species, both terrestrial and marine, into Arctic polar regions. This phenomenon is also influenced by climate change, with warming temperatures allowing temperate species to extend their range into formerly colder areas.

Day 7 Key Environment Terms Tropicalisation and Borealisation Tropicalisation: Rising sea temperatures from climate change are causing tropical marine species to move from the equator towards the poles. Simultaneously, temperate species are retracting. This mass movement of marine life is known as tropicalisation. Day 6 Key Environment Terms Grey Rhino and Black Swan Event A Grey Rhino is a high-probability, high-impact risk that is obvious and visible, but still often ignored until it’s too late. Exampleis climate change and Wayanad landslide in 2024. A Black Swan event is a rare, unpredictable event with an extremely large impact, which people try to explain only after it has happened. An example is the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Day 5 Solastalgia Key Environment Terms It is the emotional distress or “homesickness” one feels when your home environment changes in unwanted ways, even though you’re still living there. It’s the pain of watching a beloved place lose its familiar comfort, solace, or identity due to environmental degradation. The term was coined in 2003 by Australian environmental philosopher Glenn Albrecht during his work with communities affected by open-cut coal mining in New South Wales.

Day 4 Key Environment Terms Eco-anxiety Eco-anxiety (climate anxiety or climate distress) is the chronic fear, worry, grief, or despair people feel about the state of the environment and the impacts of climate change. It’s not an official clinical diagnosis in the DSM-5, but a rational emotional response to very real threats like extreme weather, biodiversity loss, and uncertain futures rather than a disorder.
