Over 6,500 people have signed a petition urging authorities to rule out euthanising Neil the seal, after a wildlife official warned it couldn't be taken off the table.
The petition, which went live yesterday, calls on the state government to guarantee a non-lethal plan for the elephant seal, who returns to Tasmania's south-east beaches each year to moult.
It wants restricted access zones and fines for anyone who disturbs him.
It follows a briefing where a wildlife biologist warned there was a risk of "loving Neil to death", noting big animals elsewhere had been euthanised over risky public behaviour.
The 5yo seal weighs about 1,000kg and could one day reach three tonnes
