➡️Polluted River Stretches in India
A river stretch is considered polluted when its water fails to meet the prescribed water quality standards, making it unfit for designated uses like drinking, bathing, irrigation, or supporting aquatic life.
👉Key indicators include
🔹BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand): High → organic pollution
🔹DO (Dissolved Oxygen): Low → oxygen depletion
🔹Coliforms: High → microbial contamination
👉Current Status
🔹311 stretches polluted across 279 rivers.
👉Causes
🔹Untreated sewage, industrial effluents, solid waste, agricultural runoff.
👉Impact
🔹Oxygen depletion, threat to aquatic life, human health risks.
👉Example
🔹Yamuna (Delhi stretch): BOD ~70 mg/L → critically polluted.

➡️BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand)
👉BOD measures the amount of dissolved oxygen required by microorganisms to decompose organic matter in water.
👉High BOD → More organic pollution → Lower oxygen → Harm to aquatic life.
Example
Yamuna (Delhi stretch): BOD ~ 70 mg/L, indicating severe organic pollution and oxygen depletion.
👉Used as a primary indicator of river water quality and pollution level.

➡️Why India is not importing corn from the US
👉GM Corn Restriction: India bans genetically modified corn, which constitutes ~94% of US corn exports.
👉High Tariffs: Import duty 15% for limited quantity, 50% beyond, making US corn expensive.
👉Domestic Production: India is the 5th largest producer, with growing demand for ethanol reducing import reliance.
👉Alternative Sources: Imports primarily from Myanmar and Ukraine, which meet India’s regulatory requirements.

🔹Market Size: India’s AYUSH sector grew from $2.85 billion (2014) to $43.4 billion (2023), projected to reach $200 billion by 2030.
🔹Exports: India exported $651.17 million worth of AYUSH products in FY 2023–24, with the USA, Germany, and Italy as top destinations.
🔹Global Rank: India is the second-largest producer of medicinal herbs globally, after China.
👉 Public Awareness & Usage
🔹Household Awareness: ~79% rural and 80% urban households aware of medicinal plants and home remedies.
🔹Yoga & Wellness Practices: Millions practice Ayurveda and Yoga for preventive health.
👉 Scientific Validation & Research
🔹Over 43,000 AYUSH studies documented, showing increasing scientific interest.
🔹WHO reports 88% of countries use traditional medicine, with 40% of pharmaceuticals derived from natural products.
👉Government Support
🔹National AYUSH Mission (NAM): Promotes infrastructure, education, and research.
🔹Traditional Knowledge Digital Library (TKDL): Protects indigenous medicinal knowledge.
🔹Research & Development: Funding for clinical trials and evidence-based validation.

➡️A PHC typically serves around d 30,000 people, including all ages persons.
In hilly and tribal areas 20,000 people
In Urban areas 50,000 people.
👉Challenges
🔹Human Resource Shortage: Lack of doctors, nurses, and health workers in rural PHCs.
🔹Infrastructure Deficit: Many PHCs lack proper buildings, beds, and basic facilities.
🔹Inadequate Funding: Low public health expenditure (~1.5% of GDP).
🔹Access & Awareness Issues: Remote areas and low health literacy reduce utilization.
👉Solutions
🔹Strengthen Infrastructure & Staff: Upgrade PHCs, recruit doctors/nurses, incentivize rural postings.
🔹Increase Funding: Raise health expenditure to at least 2.5–3% of GDP.
🔹Digital & Telemedicine Initiatives: Use e-Sanjeevani and mobile health apps.
🔹Community Engagement: Involve local bodies, NGOs, and Panchayats.
👉Way Forward
🔹Strengthen PHCs under Ayushman Bharat Health & Wellness Centres for universal health coverage.

Automotive Research Association of India(ARAI) exploring to blend with diesel
👉Can be blended up to 10–15% without engine modifications.
👉High energy content → maintains engine efficiency.
👉Emission benefits: lowers particulate matter & CO; less NOx than other alcohols.
👉Better miscibility than ethanol → avoids phase separation.
👉Sustainable biofuel: produced via biomass fermentation; supports India’s renewable energy goals.

➡️MSC Elsa-3 Shipwreck &(Marine living resources and ecology) CMLRE by ministry of earth sciences Findings
👉MSC Elsa-3 sank off Kerala (May 2025) with ~450 tonnes fuel + hazardous cargo. investigated.
👉 Findings
🔹Water & Sediments: High PAHs( polyaromatic hydrocarbons)+ heavy metals (Ni, V, Pb, Cu).
🔹Marine Biodiversity: Mortality of zooplankton, fish eggs & larvae → fishery collapse risk.
🔹Benthic Damage: Sensitive fauna declined; pollution-tolerant species rose.
🔹Surface Indicators: Oil slick (~5 sq km) + seabird oiling.
🔹Microbial Response: Surge in hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria.
👉Recommendations
🔹Seal wreck fuel tanks.
🔹Long-term monitoring of waters & fisheries.
🔹Compensation & livelihood safeguards.
🔹Apply Polluter Pays Principle.
