Modern Biotechnology Efforts: • Genetic modification projects at institutions like the Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research (EIAR) are focused on improving crops such as teff, coffee, and various forest trees for commercial cultivation. --- ▎Biogas and BiofuelsBiogas:Definition:   • Biogas is a flammable gas primarily composed of methane (50–80%) and carbon dioxide (15–45%), produced through the anaerobic digestion of organic materials (plant material or animal waste) by bacteria.   • Renewable Energy Source:   • It can be used for cooking, heating, and generating electricity. • Composition of Biogas:   • Methane: 50–80%   • Carbon Dioxide: 15–45%   • Water: 5%   • Hydrogen Sulfide and other gases: 0–3% ▎Biogas Production:Process:   • Biogas is produced in a biogas generator or digester that holds organic matter and the bacteria responsible for its breakdown.   • Bacteria decompose plant materials (like cellulose) into sugars, which are then converted into methane and other gases through anaerobic respiration. • Advantages:   • Can utilize organic waste such as farm refuse, garden waste, and dung.   • The leftover slurry from biogas production serves as a nutrient-rich fertilizer. • Challenges:   • Cultural taboos in some regions (e.g., India) may restrict the use of human waste in biogas production, limiting efficiency. ▎Scaling Up Biogas Production: • While mostly utilized on a small scale (households, farms, villages), there is growing interest in scaling up biogas production for entire communities or industrial applications.   • Global Use:   • In China, over 7 million biogas units produce energy equivalent to 22 million tonnes of coal.   • In Ethiopia, simple biogas generators are being tested to reduce reliance on traditional fuels and provide renewable energy. --- ▎Ethanol-Based FuelsProduction:   • Ethanol is produced by fermenting crops like sugarcane, maize, and potatoes. The fermentation process is anaerobic, breaking down sugars into ethanol and water.   • Extraction:   • After fermentation, ethanol is extracted by distillation and can be used as fuel in vehicles. ▎Advantages of Ethanol as Fuel:Carbon-Neutral:   • The carbon dioxide released during combustion is offset by the carbon dioxide absorbed by plants during photosynthesis. • Less Pollution:   • Ethanol burns cleaner than conventional fossil fuels, producing fewer toxic gases like carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides. ▎Challenges with Ethanol: • Large amounts of plant material are needed to produce ethanol, making it difficult to meet the energy needs of industrialized countries solely through ethanol.   • Most vehicles require modifications to run on pure ethanol; however, a blend of ethanol and gasoline (gasohol) can often be used without modifications. ▎Ethiopia’s Efforts: • Ethiopia is exploring the use of ethanol as fuel, particularly from sugarcane, and has begun mixing ethanol with gasoline for vehicle use.
