1. C - d - orbitals
Transition metals have characteristic Properties different from those of other groups elements because of thier partially filled or incompletely filled d-orbitals
2. D - Sn
Sn, Al, Pb, Sn and Be are amphoteric metals hence would dissolve in both acids and bases to liberate Hydrogen
Sn + 2NaOH + 2H2O ==> Na2Sn(OH)4 + H2
3. C - Ca
K/Na respectively react explosively/vigorously with cold water
CA reacts slowly with cold water releasing H2 gas in bubbles only but rapidly with warm or hot water
Mg/Al/Zn/Fe/Pb/ react with steam at red heat
Cu/Hg/Ag/Au dies not react with water in any form
4. C - blast reduction
This is the modern direct-reduction method
ADVANTAGES OF BLAST REDUCTION
1. Cheap sources of the reducing gases
2. Opportunity to produce all grades of steels
5. C - mordant
Al(OH)3 is used as mordant which helps dyes to stick to clothes
6. D - cooling a molten mixture of the metals
Alloys are prepared by heating the mixture of the metals and cooling them. Upon solidifying, the alloy must not separate into distinct layers of elements.
7. D - partially filled d orbitals
Complete in-filling of the d orbital offers stability to the electrons. The partial filling of the d orbitals accounts for the instability of the transition metals.
8. D - reacts with oxygen and carbon IV oxide
Na reacts readily (but not vigorously) with atmospheric gases except the N2 and the nobles gases
4Na + O2 ==> 2Na2O
Na2O + H2O ==> 2NaOH
2NaOH + CO2 ==> Na2CO3
Because of this reason, sodium is stored under paraffin oil, toluene or naphtha
