I felt that I was very close to achieving my goal, so I decided to write the exam again. This time too I followed the same strategy and again got an interview call in CSE 2020. But this time again I failed to clear the exam. The interview went well but my interview mark was just 149. After two consecutive interview failures, I decided to take a short break and dedicate a full year to preparing for my next attempt. In 2022, I was confident about clearing the exam and went in with full confidence. However, the CSAT paper turned out to be a disaster. For the first time I failed in prelims that is too because of CSAT. Though, this experience demotivated me and I started questioning my entire achievements till date. But, with my family's support, I thought of giving it another shot. Even though I failed in Prelims I find great satisfaction in having assisted a candidate by serving as her scribe for the CSE mains 2022, leading to her successful entry into the service. It brings me immense happiness, and I believe this was part of a greater plan orchestrated by a higher power, affirming my purpose in being here. Then came the final attempt of 2023 , wherein I left no stone unturned and studied around fourteen hours every day till the exam day. I solved 250+ prelims tests this year. Again, on the exam day, the CSAT paper was the toughest since its inception, yet I easily cleared the preliminary with a significant margin above the cutoff. I have also done extensive preparation for the main examination, having written over fifty mock tests and regularly taken feedback from mentors. I was sure about clearing mains exams with good marks. As expected I got my third interview call after a gap of two years. The interview was in the first week. The interview went well, it felt like a good conversation. After asking just one question, the chairman went out of the room and returned only after a while. But the other members asked very nice questions . There were no grilling, no controversial questions, everything was from DAF. Personally, I believe it was my best performance compared to my last two interviews. I had little expectations about the results as well. But when the results came I sadly realized that I failed to qualify it once again. I didn't cry this time. I realised that through this long journey of failures,I have become a person whom failures cannot be touched emotionally. I was initially under the impression that I missed the cutoff by only one or two marks, but to my astonishment, upon the release of the marks, I discovered that my total score fell significantly below the cutoff because of my interview mark. What struck me the most was the revelation that my interview score was a mere 90, possibly the lowest ever awarded by the UPSC board. I think UPSC concluded that I am having serious personality disorders or having split personality disorder and therefore determined that I must never enter the service. But still i see myself as a beautiful soul filled with compassion, love, and concern for others. Finally, I made up my mind to not give any other attempt for any government job. Now, I feel at peace with no regrets. I started looking for a job. Since arriving from Dubai in 2017, I have faced a six-year career break that has left me feeling unqualified for engineering positions. I thereby understood, that I had to build my career from scratch now. But I am sure about one thing, the experience and determination I garnered through my UPSC journey will remain invaluable assets throughout my life. Though the journey was arduous and the outcome disappointing, I emerged stronger and more determined than ever to pursue my aspirations. So the morals of my story are: 1. It's often said that having a backup plan can detract from your focus , I disagree. The lesson I learned is that after 2–3 serious attempts , Plan B is not a Distraction but it is a Protection.

2. Prepare yourself to confront the extremes. Despite giving your all, rejection is a possibility—a harsh reality that must be embraced. 3. Do not defer your marriage and family aspirations in the pursuit of examinations. Certain milestones in life unfold at opportune moments, and it's essential to respect their timing. 4. Prioritize your physical and mental health; don't sacrifice it for exam preparation. All the best! If we haven’t met, my name is Ashif Abdulrahman I used to guide new aspirants through my telegram channel @upscmentor_ashif. I lacked a mentor when I needed one. So, hopefully, my post may help any aspirants who need help.

My UPSC Story My name is Ashif Abdulrahman, I devoted six years of my productive life tirelessly preparing for the UPSC CSE, but I ultimately did not make it to the final selection list. First of all, even though I didn't achieve my target, I don't consider myself a loser. Instead, I see myself as a warrior who fought relentlessly, giving his all until his very last breath on the battlefield. You may be wondering why I am sharing my experience now. I am sharing it because I believe that not only the toppers but also those who have faced setbacks have valuable experiences to share, which can be incredibly motivating. UPSC was not my childhood dream, I ended up here accidentally. I never thought about writing any competitive exam during my college days. I completed my engineering degree and started searching for opportunities in that career. Eventually, I ended up with a high-paying job in Dubai after three years. By the age of 25, i was receiving a salary which was higher than that of a Chief Secretary in India. I was an excellent software coder and I was enjoying what I was doing. However, life is full of uncertainties and twists. In early 2017, my father was diagnosed with Cancer in its advanced stages. The doctors said it was inoperable and that he didn't have much time left. Faced with a dilemma, I had to choose between my job and my family responsibilities. Without a second thought, I left my job and returned to India to look after my father in his last days. I devoted myself entirely to caring for my father in his final days, as he regressed into a childlike state, grappling with memory loss. Every moment, I remained by his side, never leaving his room. It was unbearably painful to know that my father was dying and to feel utterly helpless. All I could do was hold him close, share in his pain, and cry. During this period, I got the idea to start preparing for competitive exams in India. This is how I began my UPSC preparation. When I started my preparation, I was 26 years old and contending with the traumas stemming from my father's condition. I decided to go with self-study, recognizing it as the sole possible path available to me at the time. I still remember completing the first reading of the pdf of Laxmikant in the hospital room.Despite my father's deteriorating condition, I appeared for the preliminary exam, which was conducted on June 3, 2018. My exam center was Kochi, which was about 300 km from my home. This was the only day I got separated from my father since I came back from Dubai. My father peacefully passed away on July 3, 2018, following a courageous battle with prolonged suffering. I believe I fulfilled all my duties as a son and was fortunate to be with my father in his final moments. I still see him in my dreams and converse with him when I visit his grave. I hope to be reunited with him soon. After my father's passing, I thought about returning to Dubai to resume my career where it was disrupted. But the results of the preliminary exam came on July 18th, and fortunately or unfortunately, I was there in the list. So, I decided to hold my future plans and to write the main examination. Till that date, I had never read the optional paper and didn't write a single mains answer. Somehow, I managed to complete the papers, but I was sure that I would not clear the mains. My family supported me and encouraged me to take the exam one more time. So, I decided to give it a full-fledged attempt. In my second attempt, I followed the same self-study strategy as in my first attempt and successfully cleared the prelims. Afterward, I relocated to Trivandrum and joined the mains test series, which helped me secure an interview call, but unfortunately, I did not make it to the final list.
