During this incident, hackers accessed the personal information of approximately 25 million customers and drivers in the United States. Rather than fulfilling their legal obligation to report the data theft, Uber opted to pay the hackers $100,000. This occurred towards the end of 2016, but it wasn't until November 2017 that Uber's CEO, Dara Khosrowshahi, disclosed that hackers had obtained the names, email addresses, and phone numbers of 57 million Uber users worldwide.
