Trade Mastermind has contributed over £1 billion to the UK economy… and we’re just getting started. That number represents real trades businesses growing, creating jobs, serving more customers and building something bigger for their families and communities. In Episode 122 of Unfinished Business, we share the story behind the billion: where we started, what it took to get here, and why we believe the biggest opportunities for our industry are still ahead of us. Your business will never outperform the standards you are prepared to tolerate. A missed deadline that nobody challenges becomes normal. A poor customer experience without consequences becomes acceptable. A manager repeatedly missing their target teaches the rest of the team that targets are optional. Culture is not created by the values written on an office wall. It is created by the behaviour leadership rewards, challenges or quietly ignores every day. But here’s what many entrepreneurs get wrong: they lower standards because they want to protect relationships and avoid difficult conversations. In reality, avoiding the conversation doesn’t protect the person or the business. It allows underperformance to continue until the problem becomes too large to ignore. Strong leadership means setting clear expectations, giving people the support required to succeed and holding them accountable when those expectations are not met. What standard is your business currently tolerating that needs to change?

Britain doesn’t celebrate success. It resents it. We encourage people to be ambitious, build businesses and create wealth... until they actually do it. Then we call them lucky, greedy, arrogant or ask whether they really deserve what they have achieved. But here’s the contradiction. Britain needs entrepreneurs. We need people prepared to risk their capital, build companies, create jobs, pay wages, generate taxes and invest in future growth. You cannot demand better employment, stronger wages and a growing economy while resenting the people who create businesses. Of course, wealth should be created responsibly. But making money is not something people should automatically be ashamed of. Success should show others what is possible... not give the country another person to tear down. Do you think Britain celebrates successful people, or secretly resents them?

In this week’s episode of Unfinished Business, I tell you the story of how I retired my mum at 27 years old, and how I went from a one man band to building a 7+ figure business that enabled me to achieve it. I watched my mum work hard, sacrifice a lot and always make sure I had everything I needed. So when I started my first business at 22 with a £1,500 van, I made myself a promise: If I ever became successful, I’d make sure my mum never had to worry about money again. Five years later, at 27, I was able to tell her to call work, hand in her notice and retire. For me, success was never just about what I could buy for myself. Success means more when the people who sacrificed for you get to enjoy it too. 🎬 Watch the latest episode of Unfinished Business now on YouTube to hear the full story. https://youtu.be/McPkUG8ISMQ

We need more entrepreneurs in government. People who have built companies, created jobs, made payroll, managed cash flow, taken risks and experienced the reality of keeping a business alive. The UK’s businesses employ millions of people, generate wealth and fund the public services that keep this country moving. Yet many of the decisions affecting them are made by people who have never run one. But here’s what policymakers need to understand: businesses don’t need more red tape, complexity and barriers. They need an environment that rewards ambition, encourages investment and makes it easier to employ people, innovate and grow. I’m not suggesting every politician needs to be an entrepreneur. But if we want a stronger, wealthier and more competitive economy, we need far more people around the table who understand how wealth is actually created. Britain should become the best country in the world to start, build and scale a business. 🇬🇧 Do you agree?

The biggest challenge after reaching seven figures isn’t growing the business. It’s becoming the CEO capable of leading it's next stage. The decisions, habits and management style that helped you build the first £1 million can quickly become the ceiling preventing you from reaching £3 million, £5 million or beyond. At this level, the business needs more than energy and ambition. The answer isn’t simply to work harder. It’s to surround yourself with experienced people who can challenge your decisions, identify what you cannot see and hold you accountable to the company you are capable of building. That is exactly the environment I’m creating inside my private CEO Seven Figure Boardroom. If your business is already generating £750,000+ and you want to work directly with me alongside other ambitious CEOs, message me “BOARDROOM” and I’ll send you the details.

+1
By 29, I had experienced the kind of success most entrepreneurs spend their entire lives working towards. Then I lost it all. When I started rebuilding during lockdown, I had no idea where the next chapter would take me. I only knew one thing: this could not be how my story ended. I still believed I had it in me to rise again, and I was prepared to do whatever it took to rebuild everything I had lost. Today, we’ve built multiple companies, created almost 100 jobs and are working towards more than £30 million in annual sales. But the most valuable result isn’t simply the revenue. It is knowing that the second time, I built with the experience of someone who understands how quickly success can change. Failure is expensive. Make sure you keep the lesson.

Hard Work vs Smart Work (The Truth Nobody Talks About) I talk a lot about hard work because it’s one of the most important ingredients for success in business and life. Anyone telling you that hard work doesn’t matter is lying. When I was building my businesses, 100-hour weeks weren’t unusual and If you’re passionate about what you’re building, that’s not sacrifice it’s part of the journey. But when I talk about hard work, some people assume that means I don’t believe in working smart and that’s not true. I am all about working smart and working smart is all about leverage. It’s 100% about building systems, it’s about hiring great people, It’s about multiplying time through technology, automation, structure, and leadership. As you scale, you can’t do everything yourself, you need people working hard, you need systems that can withstand pressure, you need infrastructure that allows the business to grow without everything depending on you. That’s leverage and that is smart work. The mistake people make is thinking they have to choose one or the other, you don’t. There’s no point working smart if you’re not willing to work hard and there’s no point working hard if you’re not learning how to work smart. The people who win do both they work harder than everyone else, while constantly looking for ways to create leverage, multiply their output, and accelerate results. What do you think?

IF YOU’RE WAKING UP AT 7AM EVERY DAY, DON’T BE SHOCKED WHEN SOMEONE WAKING UP AT 5AM OVERTAKES YOU. Getting up early is a superpower and with it comes more discipline, more focus, and more productive hours which absolutely gives you an edge over time. Most people poison their mindset before they’ve even brushed their teeth, high performers create before they consume. Do you believe that waking up early is fundamental for success or is the 5am Club a myth? Let me know in the comments 👇 👇👇

https://youtu.be/ffq4toYV1-8?is=ep-eRXTGg3vdY-O0 It was great to welcome Daniel Priestley into the boardroom at TM & Valente Consulting HQ. We had a brilliant conversation about my experience winning The Apprentice and the lessons we’ve both learned from building and scaling businesses. We also spoke about one of the biggest shifts happening in the business world right now…AI AI is going to completely reshape the employment landscape over the next decade. As more traditional roles become automated or fundamentally change, I believe we’re going to see a huge number of people looking to retrain and move into skilled, practical careers and construction will be one of the industries that benefits. That’s a big part of why I’m so bullish about the future of construction education. I shared with Daniel my ambition to go on a buying spree for technical colleges across the UK, building an education group capable of training the next generation of tradespeople, entrepreneurs and construction business owners. Daniel also shared his perspective on leadership, becoming a Key Person of Influence and building a company that can continue growing without the founder becoming its biggest bottleneck. A really interesting conversation about business, AI, education and where the next decade of opportunity is heading. You can watch the full conversation and go behind the scenes of Daniel’s visit in this week’s episode of Unfinished Business. Watch it now on the Joseph Valente YouTube channel.
