Reflections on the 80th Anniversary of the foundation of KIM IL SUNG University . Today , 1st of October , is a grand day in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea , for it is the 80th anniversary of the foundation of KIM IL SUNG University , the first ever people’s university in Korea where the sons and daughters of workers and peasants studied . KIM IL SUNG University was founded in 1946 . A patriotic peasant named Kim Won Je met President KIM IL SUNG and donated rice to the state and this donation was used to help set up the university . Nowadays the university is massive , proving that mighty oaks do indeed grow from small acorns . KIM IL SUNG University has 10,000 students and 22 faculties . I have visited the university on several occasions such as in 2012, 2015 and 2025 . The university has undergone expansion. It has a state of the art e library as well as a swimming pool and sports hall . In the past I have been guided by staff from the university as Professor Ri in April 2012 and Ms Kil in 2017. Unlike the UK , in the DPRK university education is free of charge with no tuition fees . Students are even provided with clothes and accommodation free of charge . In the UK even before Tony Blair introduced tuition fees (which can be up to £10,000 per year) , universities were dominated by students from the bourgeois elite with students from working class and low income backgrounds (such as myself ) being a minority. Now in the UK the working class and lower middle class is effectively shut out of universities .In the DPRK there is the people’s educational system , a socialist education system where education is determined by the intellectual ability of students rather than the financial resources of their students . Its opening ceremony was held at Kim Il Sung University on September 29.

Kyongam Barbecue Restaurant Inaugurated in Sariwon City of DPRK Pyongyang, October 1 (KCNA) -- A newly built barbecue restaurant has been inaugurated in Sariwon City, North Hwanghae Province, the DPRK. The restaurant with a total floor space of over 2 800 square meters has various rooms and facilities to serve various barbecues, cold noodle and soft drinks. The inauguration ceremony of the restaurant took place on September 29. Present there were Pak Chang Ho, chief secretary of the North Hwanghae Provincial Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea, officials in the province and the city, working people, builders and employees of the restaurant. Kim Tong Chil, chairman of the provincial people's committee, addressed the ceremony. Then speeches were made. After the ceremony the participants looked round the restaurant. First University of People in DPRK Pyongyang, October 1 (KCNA) -- October 1 of this year is the 80th founding anniversary of Kim Il Sung University. It is the first university of the people built in the DPRK on the initiative of President Kim Il Sung. After the liberation of Korea (August 15, 1945), the President wisely led the construction of the university, after acquiring a deep insight into the fact that only when cadres to shoulder the Korean revolution are trained, can it possible to build a prosperous, independent and sovereign state. One day in November 1945, the President met officials in the field of education and said that it is urgently needed for the actual conditions of the country to found the university and that if the university is established, it is possible to train cadres to work in all fields of politics, economy and culture at the same time. Noting that if the university is established first, many universities will be built in a short span of time on the basis of it, he said that the university will become a strong cadre-training base of the country and a parent body of universities. He chose the site of the university, sent the rice donated out of patriotism by a peasant to the construction of the university building, and set up a preparatory committee for founding the university so that the work of building the university could be conducted on a nationwide scale. In July next year he made sure that an important decision on founding the university was declared and paid great efforts to found the university including the issue of selecting teachers and students. Under the leadership of the President, a genuine people's university was born on October 1, 1946. The Korean people named their first proud university after Kim Il Sung, the august name of the peerless patriot. The foundation of Kim Il Sung University opened up a new history of training the sons and daughters of the people as pillars shouldering the future of the new Korea and Juche-oriented higher education and made it possible to build an independent people's state. -0-

Delegation of DPRK Ministry of National Defence Visits Socialist Republic of Vietnam Pyongyang, September 30 (KCNA) -- A delegation of the Ministry of National Defence of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea led by Vice-Minister Ryo Chol Ung visited the Socialist Republic of Vietnam from September 24 to 28. During the stay, Ryo Chol Ung paid a courtesy call on Phan Van Giang, minister of Defence of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, and had a talk with Deputy Minister of Defence Nguyen Truong Thang. The talks discussed the issues of further boosting the military cooperation between the two countries in conformity with the DPRK-Vietnam friendly relations which have entered a new developing phase with the historic Pyongyang summit meeting in October 2025 as an occasion. Wonsan Barbeque Restaurant Inaugurated in DPRK Pyongyang, September 30 (KCNA) -- A new barbecue restaurant has appeared in Wonsan City of Kangwon Province. The restaurant, built in an excellent location of the city in a unique architectural form and in combination of classical and modern beauties, has indoor service rooms and open-air service section capable of serving different kinds of barbecues, cold noodles and soft drinks.
