The King George V class battleship HMS Anson pushing through heavy seas. This photo shows off the disadvantage of the bow shape of the King George V class. The Royal Navy originally wanted to maximize the battleship's firing arcs. This included having the ability to fire forward with minimal elevation of the main guns. This required having minimal rise at the bow. While granting the firing arcs the Royal Navy desired, the bow did throw up considerable spray, making the King George V class rather wet. While the King George V class were by no means bad seaboats, the Royal Navy did decide that they rather have a dry battleship than the best firing arcs. The final designs of the Lion class featured greater freeboard at the bow and better flare. The improved bow would also be carried over to HMS Vanguard.
