IISc Bangalore's PhD interviews begin tomorrow, with various IITs following suit. The nature of a PhD interview is fundamentally different from a competitive written exam. While exam preparation often relies on numerical shortcuts and pattern recognition, the interview demands an in-depth mastery of first principles.
Based on personal experience and discussions with faculty members from IISc and IITs, here are a few key tips:
1. Prioritize Foundations
This is the most critical attribute professors look for. It is possible to solve a complex numerical problem by fitting data into a formula without truly understanding the underlying physics. However, a lack of fundamental knowledge will be quickly exposed in an interview.
So, first and foremost thing is to
- Brush up on your basics very well.
- Refer to standard books for the fundamental subjects.
- Refer to NPTEL videos for challenging topics/areas. [Thanks a ton to IISc & IIT faculties for excellent in-depth content.]
2. Be an Active Listener
In an interview, it is more important to listen to what is being asked. Most of the time, we tend to deviate from the question and instead start to answer what is not asked, giving more scope for the interviewer. Be precise. Be concise.
3. Tackle New Questions via First Principles
When faced with an unfamiliar problem, don't panic. Use a "deconstruct and solve" approach: Break the problem into smaller fragments. Apply first principles to each part individually while considering the relevant boundary conditions. Giving a try to the new question shows your ability to tackle an unknown problem, which is a positive sign.
4. Lead with Integrity
Never attempt to fabricate stories or "bluff" the interview board. If you have an academic gap or a lack of knowledge in a specific niche, be honest. Be confident about it.
Remember: Most professors on the panel have more years of experience than the candidate's age 😃. Do not try to outsmart them;

Some messages are bigger than results, ranks, or salary packages.
This one truly touched my heart. ❤️
From struggling with poor internet and no electricity during COVID…
To facing failures in initial attempts…
To finally securing AIR 733 in GATE Mechanical and getting selected in DSSSB, NTPC, RITES & CIL — this journey is the definition of resilience.
What inspires me most is not just the success…
It’s the mindset to keep going despite setbacks.
Many students think toppers never fail.
Reality is completely different.
👉 5 GATE attempts
👉 Multiple exams
👉 Continuous rejection, learning & improvement
👉 And finally, breakthrough success
This is what real preparation looks like.
Not motivation for one day… but consistency for years.
As a mentor, nothing feels more rewarding than seeing students transform their struggles into success stories. 🙏
Proud of you, champ.
Your journey will inspire hundreds of other students who are silently fighting their own battles right now.
“Success belongs to those who continue even when life gives them every reason to quit.” ✨
