The Indus Water Treaty, a 1960 agreement between India and Pakistan, regulates the use of water from the six rivers of the Indus system. It divides the rivers, assigning specific rivers to each country with the right to unrestricted use of their assigned waters. India has rights over the Eastern Rivers (Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej), while Pakistan has rights over the Western Rivers (Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab). The treaty also includes provisions for flood control, water storage, and dispute resolution.
Key Points for a GD:
History and Purpose:
The treaty was signed in 1960 to address the dispute over water sharing between India and Pakistan, which arose during the partition of the Indian subcontinent. Its purpose was to ensure a fair and equitable allocation of the Indus river waters.
River Allocation:
India is allotted the Eastern Rivers (Ravi, Beas, Sutlej), while Pakistan is allotted the Western Rivers (Indus, Jhelum, Chenab).
Consumptive and Non-Consumptive Use:
The treaty allows India to use the waters of the Western Rivers for limited irrigation, but allows unlimited non-consumptive uses like power generation
Dispute Resolution:
The treaty includes mechanisms for resolving any disputes that may arise, including the appointment of a neutral expert by the World bank a court of arbitration.
Recent Tensions:
The treaty has been a point of contention in the past, particularly following the Pulwama terror attack in 2019, when India considered restricting water flow to Pakistan. While the treaty is intended to be a cooperative effort, it can be used as a tool in political and diplomatic tensions between the two countries.
Importance of the Treaty:
The Indus Water Treaty is considered a remarkable example of cooperation between India and Pakistan, a rare success story in their otherwise strained relationship. It highlights the need for international cooperation on shared resources, even in the face of political conflict.

Terrorism is an concerning issue not only in India but globally. As a country who have seen many terrorist attacks in the past and aware of the devastating consequences: loss of life, erosion of trust and the disruption of the society harmony. The important point to be considered is terrorism doesn't target specific religion or castes; their actions can be out of various motives. Sometimes these can be political, economical etc. One significant factor behind the terrorism is the dissatisfaction of groups with government. Addressing all possible root causes is necessary to decrease the terrorism in India.

'Terrorism in India'.
Terrorism has become a very big concern for India as India has faced a lot of major terrorist attacks in past decades in which uncountable innocent persons lost their lives. The family members of that innocent killed person are still feeling the pain of the wound given by terrorists. Even today, terrorists often attack near boundaries and kill soldiers and innocent people.
Now India has become very active toward terrorism and started to take action against it like a surgical strike in response of the Uri attack and an air strike in response of the Pulwama attack. India has understood that if terrorism has to be finished from the world then it is necessary to isolate terrorist-supporting countries like Pakistan, from the whole world so that it will not get any financial support until it leave supporting terrorism. So, whenever any international meeting is held between countries, India always raises its voice against terrorism and talks about peace and 'Vasudhaiv Kutumbakam'.
Terrorism in India has been a huge concern for the government and people for the past few decades. Innocent lives are massacred by terrorist agencies at the hands of a few people with selfish motives.
India has seen various attacks in recent years in Pulwama, Pathankot, and Mumbai. The victims of these attacks leave their families in devastation and a permanent scar is left in the family due to the loss of their loved ones.
