Everything You Need to Know About the 2022-2023 (Series IV) Sovereign Gold Bond
Series IV of the SGBS, the most recent series, will remain open for subscription until March 10th, 2023. The bonds are denominated in multiples of grams of gold, with a basic unit of 1 gram. The issue price for one gram of gold has been set at Rs. 5,611, but investors who register online and pay via digital means will receive a Rs. 50 per gram discount.
The bonds have an eight-year term with an exit option after the fifth year that must be exercised on the dates of interest payments. SGBS have a 2.50% annual interest rate that is paid every six months on the initial investment. We can buy SGBS from banks, designated post offices, rbi retail direct website, brokers etc.
One advantage of investing in SGBs is that there are no hazards or storage expenses, and investors can hold gold without having any physical possessions.
A loan with a maximum value of Rs 20 lakhs per individual is also available to SGB holders, and the capital gains tax that results from the redemption of SGB to an individual is exempt. However, if you withdraw before the 8-year
maturity term, you will not be eligible for a tax exemption.
The very first series of SGBS issued in November 2015 were issued at Rs2,684 per unit. The last traded price of the unit is Rs.5,609.80 and interest earned till date is Rs.535.12 giving an absolute return of 128.95% and CAGR of 10.57%. Whereas, if the amount was invested in FD for the same tenure, it would have earned interest at 7% pa. If I were to compare the recent issues, then SGB 2021-22 Series VIII and SGB 2021-22 Series IX which were issued approximately a year ago, have earned 10.02% and 10.75% respectively for the investor, whereas the FD interest rate was 6.25% for the same period. However, the SGB 2021-22 Series X, issued in March 2022 earned a return of 6.83% which is approximately the same as FD. Therefore, there is no guarantee that SGB will outperform FDs every single time. However, SGBS are a good way to diversify your portfolio.
