Kiribati has switched diplomatic recognition between China and Taiwan three times, with the latest in 2019. 🇲🇩⚡️ — Five drones were detected in Moldovan airspace overnight on August 27, according to a press release by the Moldovan Army. The drones entered from Ukraine, with some briefly crossing back into Ukraine, while others flew over areas near Palanca, Căplani, Crocmaz, Olănești and other locations before exiting Moldovan airspace or disappearing from radar near Transnistria. 🇲🇩⚡️ — Debris from an aircraft, possibly a Russian Gerbera-type drone, was discovered by the roadside along the Chișinău–Basarabeasca road in Moldova. Police cordoned off the area and are examining the debris to determine its type and origin. Authorities have not yet confirmed the aircraft's model or whether it poses any danger to the public, according to a press release by Moldovan police.

🇷🇺❌🇺🇦 — Earlier, a large-scale ballistic missile attack involving Hwasong-11A (KN-23), Iskander-M, and modified S-400 ballistic missiles was conducted towards Kyiv, Kremenchuk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kryvyi Rih.

Hwasong-11As struck Kryvyi Rih and Zaproizhzhia, a mixture of Hwasong-11As and Iskander-Ms equipped with cluster munitions struck Kremenchuk, and S-400s struck Kyiv. New MIM-104 Patriot PAC-3 interceptors were sent to Ukraine recently, and intercepted most of the S-400 ballistics launched towards Kyiv.

🇺🇸🇵🇱⚡️ — United States is currently carrying out a delivery of five F-35A Lightning II fighter jets for the Polish Air Force. The five airframes took off from CONUS this morning and are expected to go to Poland. This will increase the Polish Air Force's F-35A fleet from three to eight. Poland has a total order of thirty-two F-35As which will be delivered in stages through 2029. In June, Polish Minister of National Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz reported that Poland anticipates having fourteen F-35As by the end of 2026.

🇮🇱❌🇱🇧 — Throughout the night, Israeli Air Force airstrikes targeted areas among the IDF-Lebanon frontline. Nabatieh El Fawqa, the outskirts of Zawtar, al-Mansouri, and especially Ali al-Taher were struck by airstrikes. White phosphorus artillery strikes took place against the al-Dubsha heights.

🇮🇷🇴🇲⚡️  — A few hours ago, UKMTO announced a projectile impacted an oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz, causing a brief fire. Maritime monitoring sources reported a Kuwaiti oil vessel was struck earlier, making it almost certain this was conducted by the IRGC Navy.

🇺🇸⚡️ — A military judge has tentatively scheduled the trial of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and three co-defendants over the 9/11 attacks for June 5, 2028. The defendants include Mohammed, Walid bin Attash, Ali Abdul Aziz Ali, and Mustafa Ahmed al-Hawsawi. Prosecutors had sought a January 2027 trial, but the judge found that unrealistic.

🇺🇸⚡️ — Secretary of War Pete Hegseth is considering his chief spokesperson, Sean Parnell, as a potential successor to Army Secretary Dan Driscoll, who is said to be considering leaving the Pentagon in the coming months, according to The Hill. Parnell, who also serves as one of Hegseth’s senior advisers, has privately expressed interest in the position and is on Hegseth’s shortlist. Driscoll is considering leaving around the end of the year following a months-long influence struggle with Hegseth. He is also said to be open to resigning around Labor Day, although the White House wants him to remain in office at least until after the November midterm elections.

🇸🇾⚡️ — Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa says he envisions Syria rising again as an economic beacon, a bridge between markets, a trade corridor, a meeting point for civilizations and a place where Eastern and Western interests converge.

He stressed that “after the removal of obstacles and the lifting of sanctions, we have not reached the end,” but are instead at the beginning of a long path toward dignity, pride, reconstruction, development and renewal. Al-Sharaa added that Damascus has long been a place “from which great stories begin,” and declared that Syria is now beginning “the story of a homeland that regained its will and a people who regained their freedom” — the story of the “new Syria.”

Ratcliffe also urged Moscow to reduce its military and economic support for Iran. ✍️

🇺🇸🇩🇪🇷🇺⚡️ — U.S. intelligence assesses that the explosive drone discovered near a Ukrainian cargo aircraft at Leipzig Airport on August 4 had characteristics typical of devices used by Russia's GRU military intelligence, ABC News reports. A U.S. intelligence source told ABC News that both the explosives and the design of the device resembled methods commonly associated with the GRU. The assessment was made in coordination with German security and intelligence agencies. The drone, fitted with explosives and a detonator, was discovered after it failed to explode. Russia denies any involvement.

This report by WSJ follows an earlier report by WSJ claiming NATO has intelligence indicating Russia may launch an attack on a NATO country to test the alliance's unity within the next few years and attempt to cause a rift between the United States and European members of NATO.
