The trial of Dominique Pelicot The trial of Dominique Pelicot, who drugged his wife, Gisele Pelicot, to allow strangers to rape her for nearly a decade, has sparked a significant debate on masculinity in France. Pelicot and 50 co-defendants, including men from ordinary professions like firefighters and journalists, are accused of rape and sexual assault. Gisele has become a feminist icon for refusing to be ashamed and demanding a public trial to raise awareness about drug-facilitated sexual abuse. The trial has ignited discussions about male violence, with many men publicly denouncing the patriarchal system and calling for an end to “rape culture” and masculine domination. A petition signed by 170 men emphasized the need to stop objectifying women and perpetuating harmful masculine behaviors.  Use in Essay: This anecdote can be used in essays on topics like gender violence, toxic masculinity, and social justice. It highlights the systemic nature of male violence and the need for societal reform, emphasizing personal responsibility and collective action to dismantle harmful patriarchal norms. It also showcases how courage from victims like Gisele can inspire societal change. Use in GS-4 (Ethics): 1 Violation of human dignity: Drugging and raping Gisele violated her bodily autonomy and inherent dignity. 2 Gender-based violence: The case reflects systemic gender-based violence rooted in patriarchy. 3 Complicity in crime: Ordinary men’s involvement highlights societal complicity in sexual violence. 4 Breach of marital trust: Dominique’s actions represent a severe betrayal of marital trust and protection. 5 Patriarchal power dynamics: The case showcases patriarchal domination that perpetuates rape culture.

The Right Place A mother and a baby camel were lying around under a tree. Then the baby camel asked, “Why do camels have humps?” The mother camel considered this and said, “We are desert animals so we have the humps to store water so we can survive with very little water.” The baby camel thought for a moment then said, “Ok…why are our legs long and our feet rounded?” The mama replied, “They are meant for walking in the desert.” The baby paused. After a beat, the camel asked, “Why are our eyelashes long? Sometimes they get in my way.” The mama responded, “Those long thick eyelashes protect your eyes from the desert sand when it blows in the wind. The baby thought and thought. Then he said, “I see. So the hump is to store water when we are in the desert, the legs are for walking through the desert and these eye lashes protect my eyes from the desert then why in the Zoo?” The Lesson: Skills and abilities are only useful if you are in the right place at the right time. Otherwise they go to waste.

🙊THE POWER OF SILENCE 🙊 Once a farmer lost his precious watch while working in his barn. It may have appeared as an ordinary watch to others, but held a deep sentimental value for it. After searching high and low among the hay for a long time, the old farmer got exhausted. The tired farmer did not want to give up the search for his watch and requested a group of children playing outside the barn to help. He promised an attractive reward for the person who can find his beloved watch. After hearing about the reward, the children hurried inside the barn and went through and round the entire stack of hay to find the watch. After a long time looking for a watch in the hay, some of the children got tired and gave up. The number of children looking for the watch slowly decreased and only few tired children were left. The farmer gave up all his hope to find the watch and called off the search. Just when the farmer was closing the door, a little boy came up to him and requested the farmer to give him another chance. The farmer did not want to miss any chance of finding the watch so let the little boy in the barn. After a w little while the little boy came out with the watch in his hand. The farmer was happily surprised and asked how the boy succeeded to get the watch while everyone including him  had failed. The boy replied “ I just sat there tried listening to the ticking of the watch. In silence, it was much easier to listen to it and direct the search in the direction of the sound.” The farmer was delighted to get the watch and rewarded the little boy as promised. A peaceful mind can think better than a worked up mind. Once in a while allow a few minutes of silence to your mind. Sometimes all you need is to do is relax and listen.

FIRST EMPTY YOURSELF BEFORE RECEIVING A TEACHING There was once a monk living in a forest ashram. A professor of philosophy from the nearby town came to visit him and said, "Please tell me something about spirituality, about the inner Reality, and how to attain it." The monk said, "You look very tired after travelling all this way. Please rest a little and have some tea." The monk then went and prepared some tea and brought it. He put a cup in the professor's hand and started to pour the tea from a pot. Even after the cup was full, he continued to pour while the tea was going all over the man's hand and onto the floor. "Stop! Stop! Are you mad? My cup cannot hold another drop; it is full to overflowing!" shouted the professor. The monk laughed and said, "You know well that when the cup is full it cannot hold anymore however much we try to pour into it. And even then, you ask me to teach you about spirituality when you are so full of preconceptions inside. Please come back after emptying your cup, for now it cannot hold even another drop and it would be a waste of energy to try pouring anything into it."
