China’s construction of a mega dam on the Brahmaputra (Yarlung Tsangpo) poses multiple strategic, environmental, and diplomatic challenges for India. Key Issues and Concerns: - Vital Resource: The Brahmaputra is key for India’s Northeast—crucial for agriculture, drinking water, ecology, and livelihoods. - Dam Capacity & Flow: China's project potentially diverts a large volume of water, exceeding even the Three Gorges Dam; possible disruption of river flow and ecological balance in downstream regions. - Seismic Risk: The dam is located in a highly earthquake-prone Himalayan zone, increasing chances of disaster. - Unilateralism by China: - Construction without prior consultation or information sharing with India. - Poor track record of sharing hydrological data, especially during floods/disasters. - No formal water-sharing treaty or institutional framework, unlike with Pakistan (Indus Waters Treaty). - Strategic/ Security Risks: - Lack of transparency may allow water to be “weaponized” during diplomatic standoffs or conflict. - Chinese precedent of similar unilateral behavior in the Mekong basin. - Diplomatic Deficit: Absence of effective, regular mechanisms for dialogue, data exchange, or conflict resolution. Suggested Policy Response for India: - Assertive Diplomacy: Raise the issue proactively at bilateral, regional, and international platforms—communicate red lines clearly. - Institutional Mechanisms: Propose creation of a joint river commission for transparent data sharing and prior project notification. - Regional Alliance: Coordinate with other affected downstream countries to push for adherence to global river governance norms. - Domestic Resilience: Strengthen water management, storage infrastructure, and disaster preparedness in the Northeast. India must blend robust diplomacy, institutional cooperation, and domestic preparedness to safeguard its water and security interests.

Introduction: The Continental Drift Theory, proposed by German meteorologist Alfred Wegener in 1912, suggests that continents were once part of a single massive landmass called Pangaea. Over millions of years, this supercontinent split apart, and the fragments drifted to their present locations. This theory was a precursor to the modern concept of plate tectonics. Prominent Evidences Supporting the Theory: 1. Jigsaw Fit of Continents: The coastlines of South America and Africa appear to fit together like puzzle pieces. Example: The eastern bulge of Brazil aligns with the western coast of Africa. 2. Fossil Evidence: Identical fossils found on now-separated continents. Example: Fossils of Mesosaurus (a freshwater reptile) are found in both South America and Africa. Glossopteris (a fern) fossils are found in India, Australia, Antarctica, etc. 3. Geological Evidence: Similar rock formations and mountain ranges found on different continents. Example: Appalachian Mountains (USA) match with the Caledonian Mountains (Scotland and Scandinavia). 4. Paleoclimatic Evidence: Glacial deposits (tillites) found in now tropical regions. Example: Glacial striations found in India, Africa, and Australia—regions now in tropical latitudes. 5. Distribution of Coal and Minerals: Presence of coal in Antarctica indicates it once had a warm, tropical climate. Supports the theory of landmass shifting over time. Conclusion: While Wegener’s theory lacked a mechanism (which was later explained by Plate Tectonics), it was crucial in shaping the modern understanding of Earth's dynamic crust. 📚 Practice one PYQ daily for GS1 answer writing. 🚀 Join @upsc_margdarshak
